Brainy girls have marriage handicap

A HIGH IQ is a hindrance for women wanting to get married, while it is an asset for men, according to a study by four British universities.

The study found the likelihood of marriage increased by 35 per cent for males for each 16-point increase in IQ.

But for females, there was a 40 per cent drop for each 16-point rise.

The findings, by the universities of Aberdeen, Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow, were published in Britain's Sunday Times newspaper.

The study was based on the IQs of 900 males and females between their 10th and 40th birthdays.

Paul Brown, a psychologist and professor at Nottingham University, told the Sunday Times: "Women in their late 30s who have gone for careers after the first flush of university and who are among the brightest of their generation are finding that men are just not interesting enough."

Writer and broadcaster Claire Rayner said intelligent men often prefered a less brainy partner.

"A chap with a high IQ is going to get a demanding job that is going to take up a lot of his energy and time.

"In many ways he wants a woman who is an old-fashioned wife and looks after the home, a copy of his mum in a way."

I don't think "stupid" is exactly what they're saying. It's just the degree of intelligence they're talking about here.

LOL! That's too funny.

I knew that's why my husband always wants ME to do the laundry! LOL

It's fair enough...a couple of weeks ago, I got to watch him get all greasy and sweaty working on our car...I like seeing a man get dirty with hard work! :)

Mr. Ex is one smart cookie, too, which doesn't hurt one bit.

I suppose you are right about that. It was a flip comment, though. :)

I've know a guy - who always brags about how he picked brains over looks for his wife figuring he could guarentee a second income stream that way - he has lots of fun playing with the kids while his wife works her 'tail' off.

He pretty much does what he wants and SHE's the one in the rat race and getting ulcers. She definitely comes with a full stock of attitude - always going on about how men just want to 'use' women, always mouthing off about 'stay at home' moms being bored and ignorant. It actually gets to be pretty funny since her husband seems to have great fun with all the stay at home moms.

The article has it wrong by placing the alleged drop in marriage for "smart" women. The simple reason may be these women don't want to get married as they went to school we indoctrinated in the ways of feminism and look at marriage as oppression. They bought into the Nike/Reebok "I-am-woman-hear-me-roar" and marriage is not a smart career move. This is the feminist thought process regarding marriage and is wrong. Many smart women choose to get married and choose to have a life and a family. The ones "at the top" are few and the costs for anyone reaching those heights pay a high toll personally. Not just women.

I think you hit it on the head, many women on high IQ have been fed and tow the feminista line unfortunatly. Of course this isn;t the whole picture but I think it is a big part of it. I think it also affects high IQ men too. Then again, we have to define what "Brainy" and "Intelligence" means. There are such things as "book smarts" and "street smarts" as well. All I know is I would love to have a woman to love me for who I am and to be a conservative. B-)

I like smart women. The only problem I have is that they're smart enough not to get involved with me...

Points taken. However, the really smart woman makes the time to rock that cradle by delaying her own career ambition and/or taking a job which enables her to be w/her children for more an a couple of hours a day.

For instance, one of my daughters, a successful and talented programer, negotiated w/her employer as to her hours (in addition to her benefits)....results: her benefits and salary are better than fellow employees' and she leaves at 2pm to pick up her son from his school and does several hours of work at home.

I'm beginning to wonder if this thread needs to distinguish between "smart" and "wise"...

Happy News Year kidding and what not!

I get quite enough whatnot, thankyouverymuch.

The truth is, I have never encountered a woman who was "too smart". Ever. That's really not an issue at all.

Yeah, we can't help it if our shirts don't fit.

Nor do most men care that they don't! Actually I love intelligent women, being fairly smart myself. It is better to talk to someone who can understand what you are talking about generally. I would never marry a woman that wasn't smart.I have been married, now divorced(she wasn't smart enough to keep me!) However, I am not of a marrying age anymore so I guess there is a smart woman out there who will have to do without!

Now that's smart!

(My take (speaking as a former victim of the 'gifted' system-) I've found it is waaaaay better to be 'clever' than 'smart'. I have the scars to prove it.)

Intelligence and appearance don't have a relationship. But there are large flocks of women that should be put across the knee and spanked into a blushing color just to make sure they know how much they can get away with:) There are limits to things that men will tolerate:)

Now I'll catch it. Just observe:-0
