Doubts linger as Gregoire win certified (3500 more ballots than voters)
Seattle Times ^ | 12/31/04 | David Postman

"This is exactly the kind of issue that I think can be brought up in the contested-election statutes," Reed said.

But why did he certify the election if the numbers are in doubt?

"What I signed was a certification for the numbers that were submitted to us by the counties," he said. "I am not in a judicial or an investigative role here."

The latest questions about King County came after the elections office released on Wednesday a list of all registered voters in the county, broken down by those who voted and those who didn't. The Republican Party, among other groups, had requested the information as part of its investigation of voting irregularities.

Conservative blogger Stefan Sharkansky pointed out the discrepancy Wednesday, and by yesterday it was Topic A among Rossi backers and Republican Party officials.

Party Chairman Chris Vance said it could be the "smoking gun" needed to overturn the election.

The number of King County ballots counted in the final tally was 899,199 — 3,539 more than the number of participating voters reported in the county's list

In four years we won't gain one single vote from anyone because we were nice guys when the other side got tough.

The other side is corrupt. The public knows this.

We are about to sacrifice any positive image we have by throwing this tantrum and the public will know that as well.

We came incredibly close this time. Let's not form a circular firing squad now and lose ground. Perception is reality in politics. Let's leave the public with the perception that we see what they see, a corrupt, do-anything-to-win Democrat party in Washington State. And next time we'll win.

So be it...If anyone chooses to read some of the stuff that's being posted in here, it will remind them of the same vitriol heaped on us after Florida/2000. I think it's better to accept that this contest was won by Chrissy and the D's but it was a Pyrrhic victory that will cause them immense trouble in the future with the electorate who already knows they stole the election through fraud and corruption. Better we not get into the mud pit with the D's and run a clean campaign next time around

Snarius, wouldn't you like to be able to have people look at your "about" page and read that in the 2004-05 election you proudly stood up to massive vote fraud? We're going forward with or without you, sure would rather have you standing tall alongside of us. Think about it.

This travesty was to be expected. The Democrat party is a criminal enterprise.

If you're really outraged, remember Washington State Republicans need our help. We can contribute at either of the following websites:

Well, we'll have to disagree. Our positive image has netted us - if Rossi is thwarted - six straight losses in Gubernatorial elections. I think I'd be happy to risk my "positive image" in order to expose the Democrats' fraud and machine-politics in Washington.

The Soviet Union lasted 85 years...that'd be a long time to wait for the people of this state to wake up to the Soviet of Washington.

I respect you're determination. But there is another pathway, and I choose to take it. The public has already decided who won this race and they have an opinion that the winners did it unfairly.

Do you want to give them the impression that we are sore losers as well? Because that is what they will conclude after we stomp our feet and demand a revote when we were perfectly happy not to demand one when we were ahead.

Well, we'll have to disagree.

We don't disagree on principle, just on strategy.

I think I'd be happy to risk my "positive image" in order to expose the Democrats' fraud and machine-politics in Washington.

Democrat fraud will be exposed whether we get our way or not. I just think it's better not to do a John MacEnroe when nothing will be gained by it.

It is not "sore losership" to point out that there are 3500 more votes than people voted in one county or ask to play by the same rules.

The "why didn't we ask for a revote when we were ahead" argument that the Rats came up with doesn't hold water, and you should be embarrassed to repeat it.

We did not attempt to change the rules in mid stream.

We did not register phantom voters.

We did not attempt to recanvass votes that had already been discarded in one county only, then declare the election over and the other counties closed for similar recanvassing.

We did not find thousands of votes in unsecured locations up to 7 weeks after an election

What you are asking is that we completely give up our right to investigate an election that is rife with fraud and the laughing stock of the entire nation in hopes that we'll gain respect for being pacifists.

The day of pacifism in the WA GOP is over. Wake up and smell the new day. It smells GOOD

I suspect you may be wrong there...if we just pack up our tent and go home meekly it will tell the voters that we didn't really believe that we truly won -- we'd be telling them by our actions that we thought Gregoire was right about the outcome. And the media would be sure to pass that message on clearly.

We'd also be encouraging King County to keep the fraud machine going -- when something works, you keep right at it.

You're right about our current image: In Washington, the Republican Party is not now seen as sore losers.

Just losers.

I had a similar situation with the best man from my wedding. He has always been a left-winger, which never bothered me. Our friendship was fine until Gore lost- with Bush in power it seemed he didn’t want to talk to me anymore.

Politics will rot the mind if you let it.

Just remember this order:

My family, on my mother’s side is all left wing crazies, but we still love each other and had a wonderful Christmas. We talk about politics very little, but I tried to stay on issues instead the character of the politicians-it helps keep the conversation civil.

She campaigned like a crook. Bet she governs like one, too.

The "governor-elect" is more incompetent than crooked, I'd say.

As opposed to her party...

"Democrat fraud will be exposed whether we get our way or not."

I can't believe you are really that naive. Most voters don't have very long memories. They make the same mistakes over and over again in the polling booth because they can't remember, or don't care, which ones are the crooks.

It is an insult to the decent hard-working people in the rest of the state to assume that they want to sit idly by and let Seattle become Chicago West.

Shades of Mayor Daley's Chicago.

Precinct 1823 has 763 registered “Active” voters. 527 of them list as their residence address 500 4th Ave – the King County Administration Building. 241 of these voters specifically note their apartment number as #553, which is the room number of the … King Ukraine County Records and Elections office.

Over 300 of these alleged “voters” give 500 4th Ave. (with or without the Elections office room number) as both their residence and mailing addresses.

Elections Superintendent Bill Huennekens explained that the residents of the Elections office are “homeless individuals"

I'm really surprised that so many "homeless individuals" would take time out from their normal daily activities of dumpster diving for food and collecting aluminum cans to redeem for money so they could vote. I wonder if "homeless individuals" in other major cities around the country are just as civic minded as those in Seattle apparently are. I'd like to see a newspaper or TV reporter in Seattle go to some of the areas where "homeless individuals" are known to congregate (such as a soup kitchen) and ask if any of them actually voted on November 2nd, and if so, what motivated them to do so.

Please see the latest update to this story at http://soundpolitics.com/

Also, in regard to the 876,452 number, over, under, and write in votes add up to the 899,199 figure. The issue of the 899,199 votes vs 895,660 voters is not affected by that, I just don't want anyone to be confused by that number, as I was after talking to the SOS rep. Thanks to Scott for finding that.
