Tsunami Could Hit Here, Geologists Say
BY JEREMY SMERD - Special to the Sun December 29, 2004
Could New York be next?
The earthquake that ravaged coastline communities surrounding the Indian Ocean has reawakened a debate over the possibility that a tsunami could hit New York.

-One problem is there seems to be an obsession with this exceedingly unlikely but really dramatic things...-
You said it. Mass panic attack.
The devastation will happen regardless of the warning. Many lives would be saved by enabling people to seek "high ground", in the case of NYC, upper floors of larger, stable buildings. Just clearing the subways would save tens to hundreds of thousands.
Michael Moore lives there? I thought he hated America?
Why isn't he in China, or Cuba?
Wow, man discovers fire. And I thought tsunamis only hit foreign countries, and Alaska.
You would just piss your pants if you read the "letter to the editor" in today's Hazleton Standard Speaker. The reader blames the Tsunami on Satellite Dishes that have sprung up all over the globe. I was hysterical. And they publish this garbage. I was waiting for her to also blame President Bush.
If I remember correctly, the water in the Java Sea was only about 250' so if a tsunami came through it might wipe out a jack-up or a platform, but the floaters should have been okay.
The sad thing, is that this really is the way many think.
Women, children and minorities to be the hardest hit.
Actually a fault line runs right under Central Park in New York City.
There's a surprisingly large number of faults in the eastern US.
This article is idiotic. There are no Atlantic fault lines even close to the volatile one which collapsed in the Indian Ocean.
The Canary Islands are considered volatile, but I agree the risk is low, but why not put a warning system in place just in case.
Thanks!!!!
Anytime my lady, anytime!
