Dec 29, 2004 8:23 am US/Central WINDBER, Pa. (AP) Somerset County authorities say a stopped up toilet led to a mans death, when he unwisely mixed two common chemicals trying to unclog it.
Sixty-eight-year-old James Battiste of Windber died Monday. Tuesday, County Coroner Wallace Miller announced Battistes cause of death: chlorine gas poisoning.
Authorities say Battiste mixed Liquid-Plumr and another over the counter product, The Works, into the toilet bowl. The intense fumes resulted causing the man to call nine-one-one, but he apparently lost consciousness before he could tell dispatchers what was wrong.
Police responded quickly and say they were met by the strong fumes, which caused one officers knees to buckle. The house was ventilated and nobody else was hurt.
The owner of a bed & breakfast in Mystic, CT almost did this to my ex-wife. She called me sick and told me what he made her clean the bathroom with. Clorox and bleach. I have never come so close to killing another human being in my life.
Clorox is bleach.
L98 no doubt meant "Clorox and lye" which when mixed makes free chlorine gas.
Deadly stuff.
Sad. Pretty unfortunate choice of the title (by them not you). Generally, if there's potty humor to be had, I'm there.
Maybe he/she meant chlorine bleach and AMMONIA? Those two substances are deadly when combined. What do they form?
You ain't lyin'. Been there, pooped that.
"Toilet fumes" did not kill this man. Toxic checmical fumes from a home-brew mixture did.
Doh! I meant Comet and bleach. Clorox is, like a brand of bleach, right.......COFFEE!!
Somewhere JOHN LEFTWARDS is getting on a plane to rescue the survivors from the mean companies who made these chemicals!
I believe they form free chloramine gas, which is deadly.
Silly as it sounds, I nearly passed out in a small half-bathroom due to this. The cleaning crews (I was in guest housing) had dumped bleach into the toilet, and there was enough ammonia in my urine to start the reaction. Fortunately, I realized what it was and got out into fresh air.

I did this to myself in college. I was taken to the hospital and had my blood gases taken from the arteries in my wrist. It's a pain you never forget.
At the hospital they told me gassing yourself to like this is called " English Maid's Death".
I had two braindead friends in high school that used to mix bleach and ammonia in a small room, then have contests to see who could stay in longest.
They were coughing up plegm and wiping their eyes and noses as they told me the story. I suggested that their game was probably a bad idea.
Nope sorry , I can't seem to find this on my phone.
I've never seen 911 written like this....
I believe that ammonia and chlorine are two ingredients used for mustard gas.
How did you beat me here? Dammit!
I win.
