Continental Airlines Inc. on Wednesday said it agreed to become the first major U.S. airline to order Boeing Co.'s 7E7 aircraft, placing an initial order for 10 planes with the first to be delivered in 2009.
The world's sixth-largest airline said it also agreed to lease eight Boeing 757-300 aircraft to be delivered beginning in July 2005, and to accelerate the delivery of six Boeing 737-800 aircraft into 2006. The planes had been previously scheduled for delivery in 2008.

Was this announced before or after Boeing stock took a hit today?
This is a very attractive airplane.
My favorite airline for the past five years. New planes, decent service. I fly CMH-EWR a lot. The 737 700 & 800 series are nice.
Why do I get the feeling that by the time I step on a 7E7 they will have crammed three times the seats on it?
Cool I hope more airlines order it. It looks like a very nice plane. I wonder if anyone aside from China has ordered any airBUSTEDs? lol.
Shares in Boeing Co. sank Wednesday amid confusion over a statement by Chinese officials that they would not approve any additional airplane deliveries for 2005.

The boys in Chicago/Everett will probably not make their sales targets this year (and their stock will continue to take a hit). Nevertheless, I look forward to flying the 787 (oops, was I not supposed to say that yet?) when it goes into service.
Good deal. (My Nephew is employed by Continental. I think he's based out of Cleveland, so keep flying them and keep my Nephew employed ;-)
Anyway was quite pleased. Doubt if I'll ever get a chance to fly on the 7E7 [usually relegated to 737s, MD80s or CRJs]. But it does look like the kind of a/c that I would really like to fly in one day.
The 7E7 news is great, but I thought the 757 program was ended?
Yeah:
"On Oct. 28, Boeing marked the completion of its 757 commercial airplane program, as thousands of employees, retirees, and guests saluted one of history's most successful passenger airplanes. The 1,050th and final 757, a Shanghai Airlines 757-200, was the centerpiece of a ceremony at the company's Renton, Wash., factory. The 757 is one of only seven large commercial jetliner models that sold more than 1,000 units." ...from http://www.boeing.com/commercial/757family/last757/
So... ???
Aha, found the answer in another story:
"The airline has also agreed to lease eight 757-300s that have been in service with bankrupt ATA Holdings..."

So, ATA goes bankrupt; Boeing's left holding the bag for some leased aircraft; Continental comes in and grabs 'em... probably for a good price. That makes sense.
