As the Asian quake and tsunami death toll topped 100,000 and is rising, President Bush said the United States' initial grant of $35 million in SE Asia was 'only the beginning of our aid.' He said the United States, India, Australia and Japan have formed an international coalition to coordinate worldwide relief and reconstruction efforts for the Asian region. Aid agencies today warned disease will also cause massive casualties among the survivors as the biggest relief effort in history began.

The president took issue with Jan Egeland, the United Nations' emergency relief coordinator who called the US "stingy" in regard to helping other nations. (Egeland later said his remarks were misinterpreted.) Bush noted that the United States provided $2.4 billion "in food, in cash, in humanitarian relief to cover the disasters for last year. ... That's 40 percent of all the relief aid given in the world last year."

My friend was a democrat as was her entire family. She had always voted that way, although we never got into arguments, she and I both made comments from time to time re how we voted. One day, I was talking to her about someone else and mentioned their voting and things they said. As a throw away (almost) comment I said "I don't even know how one can be a Christian and vote for democrats because they are for everything, totally opposite from what the Bible teaches". Then I named things like abortion, etc.

Sometime -- maybe 6 months passed without another political conversation. Election day (actually the primary) was approaching -- she called and asked me who she should vote for because she knew I kept up with what was going on. In that period of time, she had changed from dem to rep. and for the first time, she wasn't voting in the democrat primary but knew nothing about the reps running. She did this, on her own, without me ever saying another word to her about politics.

She is a very devout Christian and I guess she got to thinking about what I said and realized it didn't matter how her family had always voted. Her entire, immediate family, changed from democrat to Republican.

I don't bother to even discuss things with some people. I can spend about 2 minutes (most times less time) talking with someone about politics and can tell they're not worth wasting time with because they have such a closed mind. I either drop the subject or walk away. If someone says Bush is a liar or some such remark, I know immediately they're brainwashed and there's NOTHING I can say that will change their minds, so why bother? Some people you can talk with and get thru to them, some you can't and as soon as you realize which way they are, it's easy to choose whether to keep talking.

I agree with you because with dad in hospital it gives you an opportunity to talk to several different people that you would not have the chance to speak to normally. In the same ward as dad is in a gentleman who has been involved in big business all his life and I don't know how it came up back but basically he opinion is that everything Bush does is oil motivated and he states that big business in the UK is of a similar opinion which I was already aware of by other comments made by the financial press in Britain. So in this case there is no point in arguing he and his cronies have made their mind up and that is it but of course they would say they are not bigoted, ill informed or brainwashed they would state that they have come to this point of view on "evidence" they see in the business world.

This is so typical of the very people who would say you and I are naive and brain washed in supporting Bush/Cheney. You just have to smile and keep the faith.

Latest update on dad they do not yet have the results back from the lab on the type of infection he has but they have confirmed it is an urinary infection which has spread to the blood. They are therefore giving him anti biotic intravenously and they reckon blood etc should be back to normal in about 10 days. After that they can determine if all the symptoms are due to the infection or if some of them are due to the urological problem that dad has seeing as one of the biopsies they took at the beginning of December showed cancerous cells but until the infection has gone they cannot determine anything.

If when infection gone his waterworks are back to normal he will be discharged and the Prostrate diagnosis will take its course as was originally planned which is await for committee to sit to determine treatment. If he still has problems holding or passing water once the infection has gone the hospital will contact the urologist and they determine what form of treatment needs to be followed and whether this linked to prostrate problem or not.

So basically we are not going to know anything for about 10 days, thank you for your prayers; as you can imagine this is a very trying time for us, dad especially just waiting to see what can or in fact needs to be done.

Here's an easy way to think about the difference between the Pound Sterling. Just double a Dollar. If it costs a Buck here, it costs 2 Bucks over there!

When I was working in London in the early '80's, it cost $2.50 to buy a Pound. Ouchie! So, a L25 dinner was VERY expensive. Like $62.50.

Fortunately, I could convert Dollars to Pounds on a Navy base and so got a very good rate, but it was a very expensive business trip. Had it been "pleasure", I wouldn't have been there. Couldn't have afforded it.

And you wouldn't believe how much more expensive clothes, drycleaning and food are compared to here. It's almost painful to go food or clothes shopping. I don't know how they do it. I've read that most of the Brits spend all of their money on food, housing, clothes and barely have enough for a 2-week vacation.

God bless America! The land of synthetic inexpensive clothing, inexpensive homegrown produce, great beef, and waaaaaay cheaper housing.

I have come to the conclusion that the President just might be supporting Kofi to keep Clinton out of the UN. As admiring of him as the UN is, they would probably vote him in without hesitation.

I think the president is the one who appoints the American ambassador to the UN so old Blubba wouldn't have a chance of being sent there during Bush's presidency if that is the case, no matter how much WJC lobbied for it.

I believe it was on the Washington Post site, but can not find it now. He was paralyzed in an accident. A professor helped him get thru medical school despite the fact he was paralyzed in bed! He had a distinguished career as a psychiatrist. I forwarded the article to interested people at the time. jewishworldreview.com has many of his past articles. He is the man the left loves to hate. He once wrote for Mondale!

I second most of that though clothing unless you want designer labels such as Reekbok, Levi etc have come down a lot in price.

Meals out are still expensive that is why the Indian Restaurants do well you can get a meal at an Indian Restaurant including a couple drinks, starter, main course and say ice cream for sweet for 2 for about 30.00 pounds sterling if you went to a British style restaurant though there are not many of them you would probably pay 20 - 25 pounds ahead. Most of our so called British restaurants that are designed for the cheaper end of the market are IMHO pseudo American food.

You are quite correct though most British people can only afford 2 week holiday and most people go abroad to Spain or the Greek Islands or Turkey because with cheaper drinks etc it cheaper than holidaying in the UK.

Dry cleaning is terribly expensive with clothes coming down in price it can cost almost the same to dry clean as to buy them. I can buy a trouser suit in ASDA (Wallmart) for say 20.00 pounds and it can cost me over 10.00 pounds with special offer to dry clean.

Your cost of living is much less than ours that probably goes for entertainment as well to watch a film in the UK it can be anything from 5.00 - 10.00 per person.

Cheney donates to Governor's Mansion renovation

CHEYENNE - Dick Cheney is among those who have donated to the foundation overseeing the restoration of the Wyoming Historic Governors' Mansion.

The renovation is scheduled to be done in time for the mansion's centennial June 10-12.

"To know that the vice president of our country is aware of your project and thinks enough of it that he wants to be part of it and wants to be part of it financially is absolutely the most exciting thing you could imagine," said Elisabet de Vallee, chairwoman of the Wyoming Historic Governors' Mansion Foundation. ******

Thanks for the heads up, snugs. I did read the article posted on FR, I think this morning. So the info is out there.

I think the VP and his wife are both interested in American history and specifically in Wyoming history, so it makes sense that they would support it.

I'm a big fan of historic preservation of architecture that holds our history, so I'm really happy to see it. Of course, it's simply too bad this project had to be funded with that greedy Halliburton money, isn't it. :-)
