Jay Marvin 'happy to be out' as WLS talk show host

December 29, 2004

BY ROBERT FEDER

Jay Marvin, the liberal firebrand who offered a semblance of balance to the conservative spin on news/talk WLS-AM (890), was forced out Tuesday as midday host at the Disney/ABC-owned station.

Eileen Byrne, who had been Marvin's co-host from 9 to 11 a.m. weekdays, will continue solo when she returns from vacation.

John Gallagher, president and general manager of WLS, said the decision to cut Marvin was made because the show "hasn't produced what it was designed to achieve." It was unclear whether the issue was a lack of ratings or a lack of chemistry between the two hosts.

Gallagher denied that politics had anything to do with Marvin's departure. Asked to name anyone else among the station's full-time hosts whom he considers liberal, Gallagher mentioned only Roma Wade, the wife and co-host of morning personality Don Wade.

Marvin, 52, who was on his second stint at WLS, had held various time slots since rejoining the station in 1999.

"They wanted to go one way, and I wanted to go another," he said Tuesday. "There was no place to put me. It was a rough 2-1/2 years on that air shift. I'm glad it's over, and I'm happy to be out from under it. I wish them the best."

Marvin will be paid through the end of his contract in March.

What was the rant against Steve Dahl? I'd love to hear it if you can direct me to it, or sum it up for me.

IMHO it's ok to have a liberal on one of these shows, but they needed to call him on all the goofy outrageous things he'd say in passing --jobless recovery, no Iraq/alQeda link, blah blah blah...

Terri & Art would be a refreshing change. The Libs could still switch over to WGN for their daily pabulum, if needed.

I like him. Jay is a nut, but he's honest about it, and I wish him well. He has something to offer and I think that he does make a difference. I don't agree with his politics, but I agree to disagree with honest liberals, and he is one.

You took the words right out of my mouth, so I'm repeating them again ;-).

Nate Clay is one dangerous individual. We get him here in Memphis on Saturday Night/Sunday Morning. I can take him only for a few minutes at a time.

Since WIND came on the air with Bill Bennett and Laura Ingraham, I don't listen to WLS anymore until RUSH comes on at 11am. Once he's done, it's back to WIND for Micheal Medved and a smidgen of Savage until I finish driving home.

WLS is probably going to be down the tubes in a HUGH hurry! WLS is in fourth place with the Arbitron ratings for winter at 4.9 rating.

WIND is not calculated as a talk radio station yet...still listed in Arbitron as Spainish...

I Liked Jay, he was more libertarian than liberal being pro life and pro 2nd amendment. Also a big supporter of toys for tots.

To add, I am glad that bill Cameron, the sterotypical pompous, arrogant liberal media voice was taken off that 8 - 7{M slot. Jay used to b**** slap cameron about liberal idiocies all the time on one 6PM 7 PM slot.

No, Biondi got fired in 1963 and wound up on KRLA in Boss Angeles. Art Roberts took over for Biondi on WLS.
Speaking of Larry Lujcack, or Lawrence of Chicago as he called himself, Rush Limbaugh was a big fan of Uncle Lar growing up and has patterned some of his act after Lujack.

Malloy didn't threaten to call the police on me. He wrote back and told me that he put a block on my email. I couldn't leave it alone, he is such a pompous dogchild, so I emailed him from several of my other accounts. Yep, it irritated the heck out of him.

I wouldn't be surprised if Eileen is moved to some other time slot and Art and Terri take the 9-11 slot.

Exactly what I was thinking. It seems like the management was "trying them out" when Don and Roma were negotiating their contract.

Thanks for the info. You've been listening for awhile. I've got a tape somewhere of Ol Uncle Lar and Little Tommie and their animal stories I need to get it out and listen again. I smile just remembering it.

Jay was OK before the start of the Iraq war, but then he turned, and he has been quite unhinged ever since. I am just guessing, but I am sure their audience was hurt by the fact that he was always insulting the audience. He would say things like, "well no one that listens to this radio station would...." and then say something to insinuate that all the listeners were racist kooks. I think Eileen is annoying also. I don't think she will do well.

I stopped listening a while ago, but now I am super happy about WIND. Mostly because I can listen to Laura Ingraham. She is so good. Her show is hilarious and very entertaining. I was so glad there is something for me to listen to during that time slot now. (I still listen some to Don and Roma, but I got over them when they were off. I really do think WLS is in for some rough times.)

Marvin is a Marxist who's spent the last three years trying to survive on post-911 talk radio in a split personality fashion.

Whereas many media folks wised up since then, Marvin's roots ran too deep to fully come over to the truth. Maybe Michael Moore could use a guy like this.
