Jay Marvin 'happy to be out' as WLS talk show host

December 29, 2004

BY ROBERT FEDER

Jay Marvin, the liberal firebrand who offered a semblance of balance to the conservative spin on news/talk WLS-AM (890), was forced out Tuesday as midday host at the Disney/ABC-owned station.

Eileen Byrne, who had been Marvin's co-host from 9 to 11 a.m. weekdays, will continue solo when she returns from vacation.

John Gallagher, president and general manager of WLS, said the decision to cut Marvin was made because the show "hasn't produced what it was designed to achieve." It was unclear whether the issue was a lack of ratings or a lack of chemistry between the two hosts.

Gallagher denied that politics had anything to do with Marvin's departure. Asked to name anyone else among the station's full-time hosts whom he considers liberal, Gallagher mentioned only Roma Wade, the wife and co-host of morning personality Don Wade.

Marvin, 52, who was on his second stint at WLS, had held various time slots since rejoining the station in 1999.

"They wanted to go one way, and I wanted to go another," he said Tuesday. "There was no place to put me. It was a rough 2-1/2 years on that air shift. I'm glad it's over, and I'm happy to be out from under it. I wish them the best."

Marvin will be paid through the end of his contract in March.

Too bad Jay couldn't figure out how to cross over from the Dark Side and move in the direction of conservatism.

Boy I remember how we Freepers went nutz when Savage was killed by ABC. Wonder if that same "anger" when be demonstrated since it was the liberal Marvin.

I would have to say no. But maybe he can get Jesse Jackson to rant and rave before the Mouse, like he did for Felicia Middlebrooks (she makes millions for reading news for a few minutes each hour in between commercials on Newsradio 78).

I like him. Jay is a nut, but he's honest about it, and I wish him well. He has something to offer and I think that he does make a difference.

I don't agree with his politics, but I agree to disagree with honest liberals, and he is one.

There's always that Jennings and Jeffers thing, and the ever-lovable Nate Clay. You gotta hear Clay, tape him if nothing else. If I was a liberal, I'd be embarrassed to have him on my side. My favorite was Mike Malloy, sheer unrestrained liberal nastiness, but I repeat myself. I did like Bughouse Square.

Marvin was tendentious and overbearing the first contract (called all conservatives a "brain stem"), the second contract he was just boring and predictable.

They just don't make them like Larry Lujack any more. I've got about 50 hours of MP3 outtakes of ol' Uncle Lar, including the rant against Steve Dahl and his friendly advice to Chris Shebol, and The Bear Joke from Animal Stories. Too bad these outtakes are now purged.

Isn't Lujack back on the air at another Chicago station ?

You liked Malloy? He threatened to call the police on me. And that was just because I sent nonthreatening contradictory emails. But I guess contradicting a liberal is threatening by nature.

I just don't see Eileen Byrne being able to do a solo act for 2 hours a day 5 days a week. Jay Marvin is a lost cause if you expect to try and get him plucked from the Dark Side. He looks and sounds like an idiot.

Lujack is doing his time, spinning that wax at "Real Oldies" 1690 WRLL in Chicago.

I love how the flaming liberal Robert Feder asks WLS if it has any liberal hosts now. Will he now be asking the same of the all the liberal evening news programs in Chicago on CBS, ABC, NBC and FOX? How about Chicago Tonight on PBS in Chicago? Come on Robert, do your job.

The shows you mentioned are intolerable. Especially Nat Clay. I'm convinced his audience is nearly completely populated by midnight basketball morons.

Mike Malloy is certifiable.

Cheers!

What's funny is that the democrats in Chicago consider Marvin a right-wing apologist:

"So, the person who fancies himself the voice of dissent calls the last debate a draw.

He said it was a draw.

ALL the scientific polls called it for Kerry.

Over 90% of Democrats called it for Kerry.

Well over half the Independents called it for Kerry.

But Jay Marvin called it a draw.

What a GOP shill Jay Marvin is, and how gullible so many of u are, that actually believe that he is dissent.

Remember, he was the one who told Sean Hannity, on the air, that he would either support an Independent or GWB this November."

I stopped listening to Eileen & Jay's show the day their lead topic was "candy flavored condoms." Sorry for them, but my time is worth more than that.

Feder is a liberal who will always take as much ink as is needed to trash conservatives and GOPers. But at least he's open about it.

Jay was a good liberal. ( if there is such a thing) He would let you air conservative views without demeaning you as person.

I will miss listening to him. (can't say that about many lib talk show hosts)

What's funny is that the democrats in Chicago consider Marvin a right-wing apologist:

I would venture to say that it's because most of the 'Rats in Chicagoland are just plain socialists, who are even farther left than Marvin.

Geez, I remember Uncle Lar and Lil Tommy doing their animal stories and laughing so hard they couldn't even finish. Didn't Lujack take over as DJ when Dick Biondi got fired?

I would usually catch the last ten or fifteen minutes of their show because Rush would come on afterward. But the times I did hear them, Jay sounded like a complete idiot.

Jay is okay, but I can only take him in small doses. Eileen had a show in the evenings before they moved her to mid-mornings with Jay and she was alright. But together it always seemed like the topics of their show was child molesters or teen sex. Strange.

I wouldn't be surprised if Eileen is moved to some other time slot and Art and Terri take the 9-11 slot.
