You can't blame 'Uncle Sam' for what Bush does [Government is sacred... Bush is unholy]
The Boston Globe ^ | December 29, 2004 | By Robert Kuttner

Posted on 12/29/2004 5:35:55 AM PST by johnny7

NEXT YEAR, 1.3 million college students will receive reduced Pell grants for college aid. Another 89,000 currently eligible students will get no aid at all. These cuts will save the Bush administration about $300 million, a small part of what it needs to pay for its tax cuts and military forays.

“Medicare exists only because the government provides it.”

Bet you thought it had something to do with 'taxes'.

“ ...the private sector won't provide enough health coverage at decent cost.”

It's that damn 'profit thing'! If we got rid of it, we could be on the road to Utopia!

“We shouldn't displace our concerns into a generalized loathing of "the government."

That's blasphemy! We owe ALL to the state!

Right out of Kuttner Kommunism 101.

Some of the free rides are over, so what? Would be terrible to have to go to work to pay your way through college as my grandkids did.

Just a couple years ago they were crying about how the Bush administration wasn't creating ways for people to sacrifice for the war effort.

This looks like a nice sacrifice. You don't get drafted, but you don't get a cushy billet at a college either.

If you really want an education, and don't want to work at MacDonald's to put yourself through, you can always join the Army.

His claim about the Pell Grants is false. The Washington Post reported this and had to retract it. Pell Grants have acutally increased.

Good point. I got my BA on active duty and I'm damn proud of that. I got 75% of my tuition paid and now it's 100%. I can't see the downside to THAT. You have a job, a fat paycheck, AND your college is paid for! Then, after you get out, you get the Montgomery GI Bill that hands you ANOTHER 30G's! These kids need to stop whining.

I preplained and helped my kids through college but both worked the whole time. Both even have offered to pay me back now that they are successful but I won't hear of that. Due to my income they couldn't have gotten government grants anyway. I get to pay for other people's kids instead.

Glad it's reduced but gone would be better.

There are government offices in every town and hamlet in the United States handing out college money for the really smart kids out there. There called RECRUITMENT OFFICES!

Good Point! Of course the kind of job they are recruiting for is sort of dangerous and if you are a chicken like a lot of those kids are, forget it.

"Betsy Newmark wrote us to point out that her daughter's blog had reported on an error committed on Friday by the Washington Post: an error that resulted in this anti-administration headline: "Change Means Fewer Students Will Be Eligible For Pell Grants". The article claimed that 80,000 to 90,000 low-income students would be knocked out of the Pell program on account of new regulations issued by the Department of Education.Yesterday, the Post issued a correction. Actually, the new regulations, which are based on updated government data, will expand the number eligible for grants, even though some will become ineligible at the upper end of the qualified income range.

Funny thing about the Pell Grant flap is that it isn't even true.

LOL!

Pretty close to the mark. I talk to these weenies out here in civilian life, on the job, and they always say, "NO WAY I'd join the military. WHAAA WHAAA WHAA!" I always laugh and call them a p***y. What a pathetic bunch of insipid and flaccid f**ksticks as my buddy calls them. My 9 y.o. son has more guts than the lots of them do!

Ahem... they can get a student loan.

One way to get 'educated' is to work at MacDonalds or some other 'less inspiring' position before you go to college. It's a miracle what it can do to motivate you to greater things.

I started working at 14... picking tobacco. You find out that 85¢/hr. isn't the fast lane to 'the good life'.

These kids need to stop whining.

Not their nature. I too went to college on the GI Bill. Still had to work but I made it through OK.

I have more complaints about the working world I encountered after I graduated in 1974 than how hard I worked to earn my BBA. This was right after Watergate and the OPEC torpedo, and the economy reminded me of a beached whale. I thought I'd never find a job.

True. Mommy and Daddy have been spoon-feeding them since day one, they've come to expect it. I saw a few rich kids on active duty, but not many. I guess having to toe the line, do your own laundry, work hard, make sacrifices, and generally act like an adult is too much for them.

Anybody have the actual numbers for Pell Grant money being spent in the new budget compaired to previous years?

Many of these students don't belong in college to start with.

Good!! It's about time these spoiled brats go out get a job and work their way through college. Where does it say in the constitution that citizens have to pay for an education for people who can't afford it or don't want to work?
