Secretary of State Colin Powell bristled Tuesday at a United Nations official's suggestion the United States has been "stingy," saying the administration expects to follow its initial $15 million Asian earthquake aid package with billions more dollars....

"We will do more. I wish that comment hadn't been made."

Powell bristled???

It's too bad the UN is such a stinking rat hole. Powell would have made an excellent US ambasssador to the UN, but he's too good for the current batch.

Funny they did not list what China, the Middle East and Russia are giving? Between oil revenues and government controlled industry which is booming (pick up that item on your desk and it says Made in China).

I believe we should help, but it is really getting tiring of hearing the UN complain and moan about US.

"We were more generous when we were less rich, many of the rich countries," Egeland said. "And it is beyond me, why are we so stingy, really ... Even Christmas time should remind many Western countries at least how rich we have become."

Asked about this on ABC, Powell said, "We will do more. I wish that comment hadn't been made."

Just another reason to get out of the UN. Bash the US for not just throwing billions out there with no assessment as to the best way to use it. Egeland is a moron. He really put his foot in his mouth. The US deserves an apology but will not get it because we're fair game in the UN's opinion.

BILLIONS ??????????

Apparently Powell is expanding the meaning of "humanitarian" to indemnification.

Hey, I wish the UN offical hadn't made that comment, either... instead of having people question whether he is a jackass, he's removed all doubt. :)

We should take the money we fund the UN with and give it to these countries.

I am SICK of the United Nations & their bloated budget.

I suggest the UN start cutting its overhead by millions of dollars and shift the savings to help the people in the world.

The Undersecretary, Egeland, that said this is a Norwegian liberal socialist. The typical type of guy that lands a $200,000 per year job at the UN telling the United States what to do.

Hey Powell - put a lid on it. We are busy clearing the islamofacist rats from the sewers of the middle east. Let Europe with its inflated Euro take care of this one.

Tell the UN, Kofi & Son, Jacques, Gerhard, and Vladimir to give up the illegal profits from the Saddam Oil for Food Program (scandal). That should buy a lot of needed supplies. After they have given every last dollar they made from starving the Iraqi people, then the US will decide how much more we are going to contribute.

The very nations suffering under this disaster laughed in our faces on 9-11. Many of their citizens danced in their streets.

I am sorry for them, and I will pray for them, and I am even willing to help them, because that is the Christian response.

The Islamic response is to dance in the streets with jubilation.

Yeah - you sure would like to see something like:

Powell added: "How about if I just come over there and kick your ass."

Only when the UN or EU steps up to stop the genocide in Africa should the United States pay them lip service. We're a great people, the UN is filled with cowards, terrorists and socialists. We are we even associating ourselves with this worthless bunch?

The U.S. is up to $35 million now which I don't have a problem with since this was so devastating. However, I suspect the U.N.'s tiff is that not enough of that money is going to them to get skimmed and instead going directly to the Red Cross and the countries involved.

Many of these area's are predominately Muslim, I have yet to hear of the Middle East reaching out with all of it's oil wealth.

I love how Yahoo left out the most important comments made by Egeland (from Washington Times) But U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland suggested that the United States and other Western nations were being "stingy" with relief funds, saying there would be more available if taxes were raised....adding that politicians in the United States and Europe "believe that they are really burdening the taxpayers too much, and the taxpayers want to give less. It's not true. They want to give more."
