MADISON, WIS. -- Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager said Monday that she plans to seek reelection to a second term in 2006 and will personally prosecute the case against Chai Vang, the St. Paul man accused of killing six hunters and wounding two others.
{snip}
She said she would handle Vang's preliminary hearing Wednesday. Vang faces six counts of murder in the Nov. 21 shootings in Sawyer County.

She said she wants to prosecute Vang because of her "personal interest" in cases that involve crimes against people. She last prosecuted a case of a kidnapper of a 12-year-old girl in the late 1990s, when she was a U.S. attorney.

I guess you meant it was a civil offense matter and not a criminal offense matter? Still, it would get everyone else fired from their job and serve as a record which precluded employment in most meaningful professions other than working for the Wisconsin Legislature or state government.
This is pathetic. Keg knows she is in trouble because of her OWI and is trying to make people forget about it by appearing tough in the only high profile case in WI at the time. What a joke.
Does anyone else find that sentence as bizarre as I do?
You are correct. That is bizarre. Aren't 99.9% of all crimes committed against another person?
btt
No. Consider all of the "War on some Drugs", all other victimless crimes, the incredible number of administrative crimes, including tax crimes, and the amount of "Real Crime" involving offenses against another person, is small.
Yes. With an OWI first conviction, the maximum penalty is a loss of license and a fine. It is a very serious traffic offense, but it is still just a traffic offense, not a crime.
OWI second is a misdemeanor and carries mandatory jail time, loss of license and a fine. The penalties continue to increase for each successive OWI.
OWI 5th is a felony which exposes you to a minimum of a year in prison.
There should never be one standard for those in power and one for those at the other end. In private industry, a drunk driving offense will cost you your job. Why should it be any different for the priveledged?
What! OMG - what a circus.
hope she stays in Hudson. Or hires a cab to drive her
drunk ass from Madison.
She's a self-serving nut trying to save face. That said, Doyle can't do anything about it other than say he don't think its a good idea. I think it would be easier to convince the victim's families that she has no experience in criminal prosecution and that the family should demand an experienced attorney. She just turns my stomach!
Just in time for New Year's Eve!
Stay home, everybody! Stay home!
My understanding is that Doyle can't stand her. Don't believe he is supporting this unwise decision.
I agree. I will be talking to a member of the family on Monday. It will be interesting to see what she says. My source in the WI legislature says that Doyle is no fan of Peg the Keg. He also says that if the Dems in the WI leg don't come down on her for doing this, they will. But don't expect anything until next week.
Good point. She may be driving tonight after the preliminary hearing for Vang.
Hide your women and children! Pinot Peg is on the loose!
Be sure to tell her that all she has to do is speak up and others will follow.
Will do.
