In the most peaceful revolution since South Africa ended its apartheid regime by electing Nelson Mandela president in 1994, Ukraine has just elected opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko president of the former Soviet satellite republic. The victory comes for the pro-Western leader after a dirty campaign that saw him poisoned and only after hundreds of thousands of demonstrators filled the streets to protest voter-fraud. "We peacefully, beautifully, elegantly and without any drops of blood changed Ukraine," Mr. Yushchenko told cheering supporters.

You bet! This IS great news. From the exit poll article, it sounds like Yushchenko won BIG ! The first "official" returns/results will be out and posted shortly. They said "Monday morning" in the exit poll article.

She worked for the elder Bush. She kept her culture alive here in America. Yes, normally we don't mind. E Pluribus unum - out of many, one.

As with the victory of Solidarity (led by Lech Walensa) I see Ukraine's ability to carry out a democratic election to be just all part of the plan: the west will be 100% free. Now if only Marie could change more minds in France...

I KNOW Ukrainians here.
Those people on FreeRepublic who opposed Yuschencko were either Russians, Russian agents, or people who were themselves mislead by Putins disinformation campaigns.

"The square, the main rendez-vous point where hundreds of thousands of pro-Yushchenko protesters massed for weeks"
The liberal Putin puppet press called it tens of thousands.
Now the truth is out.

Let France sink to to moral, economic and political irrelevance it has REALLY become - and perhaps always was.

I am sure that Pope John Paul is giving thanks tonight. I watched him on Christmas eve and thought about his life and how much he has done for the cause of human rights and dignity in eastern europe.

I think that we will see an "unaligned" Ukraine; with a strong burst of Nationalisim. Too, I think that many among the Ukrainian diaspora will think of returning home from all over the world as conditions improve.
This will be an interesting transition.

Stretch here: The old Geezer.... WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL.
NOW, all we need is for companies like WAL-MART to pull some of their trillions of dollars out of China, and establish plants in Ukrain to boost their economy, rather than boosting the economy of China, our avowed enemy. They need to promise the people in Iraq and Afganistan that they too, will be blessed with factories to manufacture clothing, furniture and other items to make it a self-serving democracy. Why put their money into China when they use it to build up their military, which, probably, one day will be used against us as Japan did in WW2...And get Clinton's hold out of that country.

The contingent is about as patriotic as the John Kerry troll contingent.
It's a solemn reminder: think for yourself and always mistrust anyone who criticizes America for everything we've done in the name of peace and freedom. You always have to ask if there's some sinister motivation. Usually there is.
