I've heard from other Freepers that Diego Garcia and personnel there are fine. The coral ring apparently deflected much of the impact of the tsunami.

"I just recieved an email from my son who is stationed at Diego Garcia, according to him they didnt even feel the quake, and no sign of any waves coming their way. He was talking more about what a great meal they were fed on Christmas then what was going on elsewhere. Which was FINE with me!"

That is good news. Some of our more learned posters here had said that something in deep water would not even notice a tidal wave passing. Diego Garcia is a coral atol built on the rim of a dormant volcano. So, there is no shallow shelf around it for a tidal wave to pile up on. Somalia, that is on the horn of Africa got hit pretty hard, and it is much father away from the epicenter than DG. So, the wave almost certainly shot by Diego Garcia. It could have been traveling at almost 500 mph.

...people were walking out into the bay to pick up the stranded fish, only to be wiped out by the wave.
