It's great that they are posting the warning. Now I wonder if they are erring on the side of caution or if they have actual numbers or tidal readings which point them in that direction.

AFAIK, it's okay to post from that site:

Terra Daily:

Oman warns of possible tidal wave hitting coast following Asian quake

MUSCAT (AFP) Dec 27, 2004

"Oman warned Monday of a tidal wave possibly developing around its coast as a result of a massive earthquake in Asia that unleashed tsunamis across the region killing thousands, newspapers reported.

"The Omani coast witnessed increasing wave heights owing to the earthquake in Asia. The phenomena led to high tides which endangered coastal areas, ports, boats and vessels," said a statement by the Royal Oman Police, appealing to residents, and fishermen in particular, to be wary.

The death toll from the earthquake off Indonesia and tidal waves that it unleashed rose to more than 16,000 Monday as officials reported deaths in eight countries in southern and southeastern Asia."

They were saying it could be pretty significant but I never listened closely enough to hear specifics beyond several inches and potential flash floods (I'm assuming desert and mountain areas?)...sorry I wasn't listening better...was doing dishes while it was on...but it was several minutes into the newscast so I'm guessing they aren't predicting THAT much for us (5 or more inches) or they'd have done 'storm coverage 2004' to death about it... You further north than me? Or maybe I just missed numbers that substantial (completely possible)! Sorry I'm not more help on that one!

It's no big deal...

I will take care. I almost feel like I am getting close to being home.

I am fresh out of vitamins (I took my last few a couple of weeks ago when I had the flu). Getting sick out here is no fun at all...

We are heading south tomorrow to San Diego-- I haven't had time to check the weather--are we in for torrential rain?

Please thank your fellow soldiers over there and thank you as always, Mike.

Any chance of you bringing home one of those camel spiders for the Columbus zoo? I bet Jack Hannah would be mighty grateful, LOL.

Have a great day, FRiend. Keep your helmet and boots on and your head low.

Biglook, seismologists have reported today that tsunamis caused by after shocks are possible and unfortunately likely to occur for up to a year after the 9.0 quake.

MFCCinSD reports that rain is predicted for San Diego. Not sure where your starting point is.

"'Our paradise turned into hell,' said American tourist Moira Lee, 28, who was having coffee on Phuket's Patong Beach, a major tourist draw lined with hotels, shops and bars when the tsunami swept through."

One can only imagine the horror she witnessed.

That 9.0 quake generated a wave of energy that probably will travel very far. But a lot of the energy was expended on Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, The Maldives and brushed up against Tanzania and Kenya this morning. There is an "echo" out there that may affect tides. Those after shocks may continue for some time, no one knows how much time it will take for the region to settle down. The event is over.

Seismologists and geophysicists always work backwards.

Biglook, yes the 9.0 quake is over - no argument there. I just reported what seismologists said today about the possibility of after shocks causing tsunamis for up to a year later in areas affected in the past few days.

I think we talked before, when a 7+ quake rocked Hokkaido, Japan a few weeks ago. Hilo had a tsunami warning at that time because a small wave was generated that impacted areas north Hokkaido. Whether the wave energy is directional or radiating or ricocheting, we just don't know.

This Sumatran event seems to have been directed north and west, but not southwest since Madagascar and the SE African coast suffered no ill effects. BTW, just heard on the news, that scientists warn of possible seismic sea wave activity from after shocks. What bothers me most is why were there no warnings to South Asia after the initial reporting of an 8.2-8.9 quake. What's happening now is CYA!
