I think you're right. Of course 1,000 years is just an approximation. So what if the "1000 years of peace" spills over into an additional 5 or 10 years? Peace is still peace and I welcome it. I agree with you so much on this point. Worshipping the created over the Creator. G-d knows our hearts and minds so why the pretext of needing some mediator? It just doesn't make any sense. We can pray directly to G-d. If you use a go between, just how close are you?

According to all reports I've heard, the areas where the tsunami hit did not have a history of tsunamis, just a long history of very large quakes. They also do not have tidal gauges along the shoreline.

It's simply devastating to all locals and tourists in the area who were very much caught by surprise.

It looks like there are several hundred miles of fault zone active in this earthquake. My quick estimate is about 1,000 miles (about 11 degrees latitude).

The epicenter is located just northwest of the island of Simeulue, about 500 miles due west of Kuala Lumpur, Malysia (roughly 3 degrees north). The northernmost "aftershock" is at the north end of the Andaman Islands (roughly 14 degrees north). The sequence of earthquake are all along the same major geologic feature; the Sunda Trench/subduction zone.
