Are you a siesmoligist?
The scale being reported is "moment magnitude." It is erroneously reported as "Richter magnitude."
I can vouch for the Northridge earthquake...it shook for a minute and lifted by 300lbs body up into the air!
there was a minute long aftershock immediately after it too!
Sherman Oaks, CA
FYI the real title of the article is: Maldives flooded after tidal waves, reports of casualties but no figures
There ARE reports coming out, yes, with few specifics, but that's true of many of the impacted areas...it's been widely reported that communication in the region is severly impacted (as it has been even prior to the tsunamis...) which I can attest to after communication issues with family in the region a few hours ago.
I don't think it's quite the 'censoring' that someone wants it to appear...I think it's a logistic issue...cut off areas physically because of destruction, and communication shut down because of damage, I think those are the more accurate causes.
The initial reports of just a few people in nearly every country that had reported initially have already been drastically increased...so even if we had specifics from the Maldives they would likely be WAY off.
Just FYI...(at least so the article title is corrected...that was written by the OP of that thread it appears).
It is often a function of how the seafloor shallows in an area near the coastline.
Tsunamis are, in the open ocean very long wavelength waves, with a small amplitude. As they approach the coast, the wavelength shortens and the amplitude grows. But distance and seafloor topography can help dissipate the wave energy to some degree.
Well, that changed with the recorded results of the 1971 Sylmar earthquake. I had a college friend from the San Fernando Valley, in our geology department, who swore he saw through his bedroom window patio furniture being tossed into the pool (not just knocked over). I had a co-worker in Sherman Oaks who had a heavy microwave oven propelled off the counter-top into the refrigerator door across the kitchen.
I'm a believer when it comes to the observations of those who experienced a quake. I also know that it is difficult to accurately measure time in a extraordinarily tense situation.
P.S. Glad you made it! ;^)
just in another thread, but also on the AP...
the tidal waves have killed at least 2,200....
anyone want to bet against that number going up?
I was trying to hear something on my Grundig....Radio Australia and New Zealand arent breaking their programming....

It's hard to get past your drama queen ALL CAPS and looooooong histrionic spelling.
In other words, your message is mangled in your delivery.
FNC reporting...at least 1300 dead in Sri Lanka, over 1000 dead in India.
WAY up, I'm afraid...........now most every report is mentioning lack of info they are able to get from the areas because of inability to reach them and no real form of communication. Man...afraid to go to bed...I hate to know how much it may jump in a few hours... Very sad.
