I saw this and a pic of before when the the water was sucked out. Fox news.

5.8 Hit the tip of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska Tues. morning.

I see other quakes are making it on the USGS world list again, for a few days it was all the Banda Ache (sp) area.

I could not stand the wondering anymore and called the Marine Science Center to ask them it we have had any tidal changes. They said everything is flowing the way it is supposed to be, relax and go have a hamburger. LOL I asked them if they were getting allot of calls and they said (laughing) noooo (laughing).

Where did you hear these first reports from? Curious as to what the name of the city is.

I have seen BBC and CNN reports on mass graves. Very sad.

I know you can post who you are looking for on bbc and cnn, but I am unaware and cannot find a list. Not much help, but I will hopefully stumble on something to help you.

The toll-free number to the task force is 888 407-4747. this is the US state department hotline for missing people in the disaster.

VNam68 said: "I have a good friend who was suppose to be back the 26th. I know they have a place on Phuket. No word yet from them. Where do I go to find list of people? Thanks for any help."

As you've probably heard, at this point efforts in all tsunami impacted areas are focused on finding any more survivors and then in assisting passage of those survivors to safety, medical care, food and shelter.

VNam68, here's what I was able to find, although thus far, there is no online list:

U.S. State Department Hotline
For information about U.S. Citizens affected by the Asian Earthquake:
888-407-4747 : within the U.S., tollfree
317-472-2328 : outside the U.S.
202-647-5225 : Washington, D.C. area Organizations

From Secretary of State Colin Powell's news conference December 27, 2004:

"The United States has been following this situation from the very beginning. Our embassies are working in the affected areas to assist contacting families and others, U.S. citizens who are unaccounted for.

At the moment, we know of eight Americans who have died and there are several hundred who are not accounted for yet. It just means we haven't been able to reach out and get contact with them. It does not imply that they are necessarily injured or in any way a casualty.

For family members seeking information about one of their loved ones, they can contact the hotline number that we have, 1-888-407-4747. You can also go to the State Department website to get information about each of the countries involved, and that's state.gov..."

Meanwhile prayers up and good thoughts for the safe return of your friend.

I hope you hear from your friend soon.

Anderson Cooper on CNN said that the State Dept. is getting 400 calls a day from Americans inquiring about their loved ones.

It is estimated that there are 1,000 missing U.S. citizens (if I heard correctly).

Many may just be in transit and are too shocked or too numb to call friends. At least, that's what I hope, for the sake of the seekers.

Here's an update on after shocks and includes some moderate quakes in Japan and near Alaska.

Note that the after shocks to the 9.0 quake are generally decreasing in size and timing.

It's now been revised from an earlier reading of 8.1 to 8.5. Local tsunamis are possible, but far ranging tsunamis are not predicted.
I'd say their prediction models need work. [/understatement]

True, Eric. Again, USGS had said that the local authorities near the quake should be aware of the possibility of tsunamis after the 9.0 quake.

Apparently each country's officials must have assumed that past scant history of any tsunamis meant that they would continue to be in the clear.

Accurate forecast proves itself to be 20/20 hindsight. News reported today said that there has not been this large a catastrophic tsunami anywhere since several hundred years before Year Zero A.D.
