Most Americans Believe in Literal Virgin Birth - NEWSWEEK POLL
MSNBC ^

Dec. 5 - Seventy-nine percent of Americans believe that, as the Bible says, Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary, without a human father, according to a new NEWSWEEK poll on beliefs about Jesus.

Sixty-seven percent say they believe that the entire story of Christmas—the Virgin Birth, the angelic proclamation to the shepherds, the Star of Bethlehem and the Wise Men from the East—is historically accurate. Twenty-four percent of Americans believe the story of Christmas is a theological invention written to affirm faith in Jesus Christ, the poll shows. In general, say 55 percent of those polled, every word of the Bible is literally accurate. Thirty-eight percent do not believe that about the Bible.

The history of Israel, and pre-Israel contained in the Bible give me hope that my faith is not in vain. Any thinking individual at some point realizes that all answers are not provided. If they were faith would not exist.

Part of faith is having faith that at some point the secrets of the universe will be revealed to the believer's satisfaction. The wonderful story of God's love for us will turn out to be something even more incredible, than we have been led to believe, if that is possible.

Here's to those that have decided to take that risk with me. And here's to those that haven't. We all have a decision to make, and I am led to believe that God loves those that come down on either side, but is heartened only by those who come down on one side.

And the MSM treats this as news - kind of like when they reported how new research "discovered" that there are innate differences between men and women.

55 percent of those polled, every word of the Bible is literally accurate.

Fifty-two percent of all those polled believe, as the Bible proclaims, that Jesus will return to earth someday

????

I could be in error but I believe Catholic's faith is that Mary, not Jesus, was the so-called immaculate conception.

Anyway, I haven't a clue what your getting at with your statement. Are you saying the 21% of non-believers in a virgin birth is too high? I would say you widely over-estimate the Christians in the US if you do.

Get me a turkey baster and a C-section in 9 months and I too could show you a "virgin birth" in the 21st century...

It means that is you poll outside of a Catholic or Protestant church, you're going to get poll numbers like those in the story. If you go went out on the street and and ask people (Americans) at random, the numbers are going to be much different (lower). WHERE you poll in relation the topic OF the poll is quite important.

So what do you expect of the general population then? Higher expression of belief or lower?

Actually, I learned this in *CATHOLIC* schooling, and much to your shock, have never been to a public school. I went to a fundamentalist Christian school through Jr. High. Then Catholic schooling onward.

I have a specific memory of being informed it was a misconception of non-Catholics that the "immaculate conception" was Jesus, not Mary. Her conception was immaculate because she had to be pure to be blessed with carrying the baby Jesus later in her life. I can't recall if this was in "New Testament" or "Catholicism" class. It wasn't yesterday to be sure.
