Walmart should tell the Russians that they will be back to evaluate the Russian market in 2010. Until then, they will just have to enjoy the products and services of other retailers. The Russians have apparently embraced "Third way" socialism. Unfortunately for them, they alerted a potential victim before the victim was financially committed.
I'd hate to cause anyone to start looking for their tinfoil hats but with all the airplane crashes and the laser light story, I decided to google and came across some pretty interesting sites. In my googlin', I found some remarks with regard to the Sept. 29th laser incident, including this one:
"As an aside...... this is a very similar scenario to one in a Clancy novel (Debt of Honor). Clark and Chaves used a blinding light weapon to bring down a Japanese AWAC Plane on short final. Interestingly this novel ends with a 747 crashing into the Capitol to take out the US Leadership. Kinda makes you wonder if the al Queda leadership has one Jack Ryan novel that they're all passing around in some cave somewhere."

I've seen a few laser devices on the past few posts that look like they illuminate only a thin beam of light. I would think that hardly noticeable in an aircraft traveling 300-500mph. When these pilots say the light "illuminates" the cockpit, I was taking it for granted that they meant that the entire cockpit was lit up...am I wrong?

This Travel Warning is being issued to update the security information in Libya. Libya remains on the U.S. Government’s State Sponsors of Terrorism List. The United States Department of State warns U.S. citizens traveling to Libya to exercise caution. This Warning supersedes the Travel Warning for Libya issued June 28, 2004.
The U.S. lifted restrictions on the use of U.S. passports for travel to Libya in February 2004. While Libya has taken steps to cooperate in the global war on terrorism, the Libyan Government remains on the U.S. Government’s State Sponsors of Terrorism List. Although Libya appears to have curtailed its support for international terrorism, it may maintain residual contacts with some of its former terrorist clients.
Recent worldwide terrorist alerts have stated that extremist groups continue to plan terrorist attacks against U.S. interests in the region. Therefore, any American citizen who decides to travel to Libya should maintain a strong security posture by being aware of surroundings, avoiding crowds and demonstrations, keeping a low profile, and varying times and routes for all required travel. In light of these security concerns, U.S. citizens are urged to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness.
In June 2004, a U.S. Liaison Office opened in Tripoli. There is no consular officer included among the staff. Thus, due to limited staffing and interim facilities, only limited services are currently available to U.S. citizens.
Most U.S. economic sanctions on Libya were ended on September 20, 2004. Libya remains on the State Sponsors of Terrorism List. Technologies and goods on the Department of Commerce Export Control List must be licensed by the Department of Commerce for export to Libya.
Travelers should be aware that credit cards and checks on U.S. banks generally are not accepted in Libya, and should be prepared to engage in cash-only transactions while in Libya.
Americans who decide to travel to Libya despite this Travel Warning should exercise a high level of caution. Updated information on travel and security in Libya may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 within the United States, or, from overseas, 1-317-472-2328. This Public Announcement is being reissued to remind Americans of the continuing potential for terrorist actions against U.S. citizens in East Africa. This supersedes the Public Announcement of June 29, 2004, and expires on June 28, 2005.
The Department of State believes there remains the threat of future terrorist attacks in East Africa. Travelers to East African destinations should carefully review their plans accordingly.
The potential for future threats against civil aviation continues throughout the East Africa region. Seaports may also be targeted.
Supporters of Al-Qaida and other extremists are active in East Africa. Americans in the region must remain vigilant with regard to their personal security and exercise caution. Terrorist actions may include suicide operations, bombings, or kidnappings. Terrorists do not distinguish between official and civilian targets. Increased security at official U.S. facilities has led terrorists to seek softer targets such as residential areas, clubs, restaurants, American commercial interests, western-oriented shopping centers, places of worship, hotels, schools, outdoor recreation events, resorts, beaches, and planes. Americans in remote areas or border regions where military or police authority is limited or non-existent could also be targets of attacks or kidnappings.
U.S. Government facilities worldwide remain at a heightened state of alert. They may temporarily close or suspend public services for security reviews. On occasion, the travel of official State Department personnel is restricted, and these posts may recommend that private American citizens avoid the same areas. Services to American citizens could be affected if employees’ movements are restricted. In those instances, U.S. embassies and consulates will make every effort to provide emergency services to American citizens. American citizens in need of emergency assistance should telephone the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate before visiting there.
U.S. citizens planning to travel to East Africa should consult the Department’s travel information and register their trip at the Consular Affairs Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov. BOULDER, Colo. -- If you see a piercing green light shooting into the sky Sunday night, it's not aliens, it's the work of scientists at Ball Aerospace.
The Star Wars-like light beam is part of a satellite the company is working on that will one day measure the Earth's atmosphere from orbit. It tested a lower power version in Hawaii earlier (pictured, left).
"The testing will probably start shortly after dark and last several minutes or several hours, depending on how the scientists need to adjust the frequency," said Emilia Reed, a spokeswoman for Ball Aerospace, which is working on the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infared Pathfinder Spaceborne Observations project. "If it's clear skies, with little cloud cover, the beam can be seen from Colorado Springs and Wyoming."
Reed said the laser beam, which will originate from Ball Aerospace, would be quite spectacular at times. It was originally scheduled to be tested Saturday evening, but that was postponed until Sunday, she said Friday. Reed said the test won't start until 4 p.m., at the earliest. The test will last between five days and three weeks, depending on weather conditions.
"At its greatest frequency, the beam will be about the circumference of a basketball hoop and very visible by human eye," she said.
The laser beam is about 40,000 times more powerful than a common laser pointer pen. The company has taken special precautions to protect aircraft and birds that might fly into the beam.
"Every precaution has been taken to ensure the safety of the environment in the surrounding area," according to a release issued by Ball. "The laser system is equipped with radar that will shut down the system in the event that an object is about to enter the laser beam."
The laser will be used as part of the Cloud-Aerosol LIDAR and Infared Pathfinder Spaceborne Observations project (CALIPSO) that will be flown in space later. The satellite will help scientists answer significant questions and provide new information about the effects of clouds and aerosols (airborne particles) on changes in the Earth's climate. Understanding these components will provide the international science community with a more comprehensive data set that is essential for a better understanding of the Earth's climatic processes.
Ball Aerospace is responsible for the three scientific instruments within the LIDAR and the communications equipment for the CALIPSO program.

Obviously, I know little about lasers...I didn't realize that there were laser lights out there that are no bigger than a regular everyday laser pointer that could reach as far as 20 miles. All one has to do to find one, is simply go to the Fox News site and look up the latest story about the pilot...halfway through the article, a google ad provides 2 links to such lights. No wonder there are copy cat crimes.

Iraq says senior Zarqawi aide captured in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Dec 30 (Reuters) - U.S.-led forces in Iraq have captured a senior member of the al Qaeda-linked network led by Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in a raid in Baghdad, the Iraqi government said on Thursday.
It said Fadil Hussain Ahmed al-Kurdi was captured along with two other suspected insurgents. It said Kurdi, a 26-year-old Iraqi Kurd also known as Ridha, was the brother of Umar Baziyani, a Zarqawi lieutenant captured in May.
"Ridha was responsible for facilitating communications between al Qaeda and the Zarqawi terror networks as well as coordinating the movement of terrorists in and out of Iraq," a government statement said.
"Both Ridha and Umar Baziyani remain in detention and are being question by Iraqi and coalition forces."
The government did not say when the arrests were made. U.S. forces said three weeks ago they had seized unidentified "transnational terrorists" in Baghdad.
On Monday, an audiotape purportedly from Osama bin Laden endorsed Zarqawi as al Qaeda's leader in Iraq and called for holy war against foreign troops and Iraqi forces attempting to secure Iraq's elections scheduled for Jan. 30.
The government said this week another senior member of Zarqawi's network was captured in Mosul.
Zarqawi's group has claimed responsibility for many of the bloodiest suicide attacks in Iraq and has beheaded several foreign hostages.

IntelCenter has released volume 4 of the al-Qaeda Videos DVD series.
Volume 4 contains an hour-long video released by al-Qaeda's Sahab
Institute for Media Production, entitled "The Wills of the New York and
Washington Battle Martyrs". The Arabic Edition was released in April
2002. It is unclear when the English Edition was released. The video
includes the martyrdom message of 9-11 hijacker Ahmed al-Haznawi
al-Ghamdi and speaking appearances by Osama bin Laden, Ayman
al-Zawahiri and Sulaiman Abu Ghaith. Bin Laden vows that America will
not dream of security if security does not become a "tangible reality"
in Muslim land. Al-Zawahiri describes the 11 September attacks as a
"great victory." Al-Haznawi tells Americans to dig their graves and
build their coffins because death is upon them. Abu Ghaith defends the
attacks of 9-11, stating: "We did what God the Almighty ordered us to
do... We were able to hit the head of the infidels, who openly avows
his
hostility to Islam, on his own turf..." This version is missing
approximately two minutes and 14 seconds at the end. Aside from the
English graphics and sub-titles normally associated with the English
Editions, the video is nearly identical to the Arabic Edition. A number
of sections contain video footage that did not, however, appear in the
Arabic Edition. This footage is mixed in during al-Haznawi's last
testament. The English speaking narrator is believed to be the same
individual speaking on the English Edition of "The Nineteen Martyrs"
and considered to be a probable voice match for Azzam al-Amriki.
