ABC to air account of al-Qaida in O.C. On TV tonight, suspect's wife tells of bogus charity, recruiting, her tip to FBI. The Orange County Register.
A woman who married a man suspected of being an al-Qaida operative unwittingly helped him form a bogus Orange County charity that funded terrorist activities, according to a broadcast report. Saraah Olson said in an interview airing tonight on ABC-TV's "Primetime Live" that she witnessed her husband recruit another man suspected of being an al-Qaida operative, Adam Gadahn, to work for the nonprofit group Charity Without Borders.
Federal authorities reported this year that Gadahn, a former Orange County resident, attended a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan and worked as an al-Qaida translator. His family has not seen him since he moved to Pakistan in the late 1990s.
Olson, 36, said she met her future husband, Hisham Diab, 13 years ago when she was working at a university. Asked by correspondent Brian Ross whether Diab was an al-Qaida member, she responded: "I know for a fact that he was. I was just a steppingstone to a green card."
The couple lived in Anaheim, and Olson said she has not seen him in five years. She said she didn't call police when her husband beat her or after she learned about his activities because "with all the things that he had been doing and that I knew he had been doing, I would have been found on the side of the road."
She also said she cooked dinner in October 1992 for Sheik Omar Rahman, the imprisoned mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The FBI, she said, had little interest when she called the agency after the dinner. "I said, 'I have information about the blind sheik. He's been to my house and I need to speak to someone.'" The FBI, she said, didn't know whom she was talking about. "Primetime Live" airs at 10 p.m. on KABC-TV/7.
