ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - A novelty item just four or five years ago, the digital camera is shaping up as the most popular electronics gift in 2004, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. It was runner-up last year to the DVD player, the No. 1 gift since 2000.

Catapulted by cutthroat competition, digital technology is transforming the $85 billion global photography industry by creating new ways of capturing, developing and storing pictures.

Just goes to show you.....technology is fleeting

I payed $900.00 for a Kodak DC210 ...a 1 megapixel camera about 6 years ago.

It was at the time the best one out.

Oh well.........now I can get one that is infinately better for less than a third of what I payed for my dinosaur.

The only film is the stuff the pages are printed on to burn the plates for the press.

Not any more......a lot of the newspapers are now starting to go to the digital plate burners....no film at all.

Most of the commercial printers have realized a massive savings on film and are now using Creo systems or others like that.

Digital is the way to go....but it has killed a lot of jobs in the printing industry and have brought wages way down.

I got one a while ago. Love the pictures BUT it's a pain in the a** to work all the settings. NOT simple to operate.

A thing like that might improve the thought transmission through the existent holes in my MIL’s head. Hmmmm – are they readily available? Maybe I can run out an get one before the stores close today?

Not sure bigger holes would improve that situation...

The older manual bars like mine, while not common, can be found ( I realize you are joking! ) if you hunt around- I placed an ad in Home Shop Machinist circa 1995 out of curiousity and got about five responses, in the $400 range.

If I can get all the last-minute Xmas lunacy squared away, and figger out my new-fangled Fuji camera, I'll try to post a few pix from my shop-- it's a mess, I haven't done much but store things there since closing the wrecker & welding businesses in 1999.

I will be purchasing a digital camera for Christmas. I am amazed at how low the prices are for a 5 mp with a huge screen and docking station. I can get an excellent model for $269. I am in heaven!

Just bought my wife a Fuji E510 5 mp for $230 (including shipping)from buydig.com.

I bought an 8" 4 jaw chuck (Sears/Craftsman) for an Atlas at an auction last summer for $18. Still in the box and never seen a spindle.

I also just bought the Fuji E510 for my real estate business. The beauty of this little camera for my business is its wide angle zoom of 28m. Unusual in a digital camera. I can now get some great interior room shots. And at less than 8 ounces, I just throw it in my purse. I used a Kodak 260 for lots of years - I paid almost $1000 for it back when digital cameras were new technology. But it was worth it - before I got it I was running to the 1 hour photo place at least 3-4 times a week.

Yup. They say 4 million this quarter compared to 773,000 this quarter last year.

I believe it! You have no idea how difficult it was to find one in NYC. The only place that has them in the Apple flagship store in Soho.

Will someone please explain what a docking station is? It sounds like something on a space station. (I own two digicams but neither one has anything by that name).

The docking station works as a charger and also allows you to transfer your photos into your computer with a touch of a button.

Opted for the CX7430...

Excellent choice.

I got one of these a few months ago and love it! It takes great pictures and is really easy to use. I have done a lot of photography and my own processing so I'm used to using all the bells and whistles and have boxes full of various camera gear in several different formats. As far as I'm concerned, this has replaced it all, and it weighs less than 1/2 pound!

The bundled Kodak EasyShare program is not the greatest although it can do some basic things and is adequate. Part of the problem is my computer doesn't seem to like it very much and only grumpily runs it. I am running Windows ME, so that may be part of the problem. I download my pictures from the camera to the Kodak program but then use MGI PhotoSuite to do much of my editing work, which works out well for me. However, you may be happy with the Kodak program. In any event, the MGI program is not expensive and depending on your computer, you may want to get the "platinum" version which does a lot.

I've taken a lot of great pictures with this camera already. It is extremely easy to use and is basically a point-and-shoot. It does a nice job at that and any refinements can be done within the computer program after you download. My wife is intimidated taking pictures but loves to use this camera as it is so easy to use.

I got two 256mb SD cards on sale to go with the camera as it's standard memory is totally inadequate - as is the case with all the digital cameras. The SD cards are much cheaper than the XD cards some other cameras use. The extra cards, along with some rechargeable batteries and a carrying case is all you will ever need for some great photos indoors and out. I do find the flash is sometimes inconsistent for some indoor shots but the computer program can easily correct this.

I would have preferred a 5 or 6 MP camera and a 4x zoom, but was on a tight budget for this camera so compromised for price. However, even with quite a bit of cropping it still does a marvelous job on detail. I almost always shoot at max megapixels as there is plenty of memory using the SD card.

I have taken hundreds of pictures and almost every one has turned out as I took it. This is a great camera and I'm very pleased! I also did extensive research comparing other digital cameras and IMHO the CX7430 is the best one for the price.

I think you'll be pleased with your choice.

You bought a great camera! Good going! Mine is simply terrific and their software is also formidable.

Thanks for the info. I have a few SD cards already from my other camera. I also have MGI Photosuite as well as Arcsoft PhotoImpression, PaintShop Pro, and Adobe Photodelux. Haven't really used any of them much so this will give me a chance to experiment. I also have a 5-1 card reader to download off the SD card to minimize battery usage. Supposed to come in today, right in time for Christmas...hope so. I must admit that the 10x optical zoom on the other was tempting but no more pictures than I take, the 3x will probably be plenty.

"The "other guys" in the trade had Quick Way bars"

Only used a Van Norman a few times but it was a no comarison to the Quick Way, especially if you replaced the motor with one twice the size of the one that comes stock.

When we had the speed shop in 58 and built Chev small blocks for people all over the country, we bored a 283 1/8th with 2 passes, the last one a 20 thousants cleanup.

I believe it too. I was buying a new PowerBook on the day after Thanksgiving in L.A. The Apple store was jammed. My purchase was in the thousands ... but the guy in front of me was buying several 60 gig photo iPods ... and the one in front of him was buying 6 iPod Minis in various colors.

Last week I went back and decided on a 20 gig iPod and the mind-blowing Bose Sound Dock. Simply amazing!

That's a great deal- a 4-jaw is slow but very versatile. Half the battle in turning or shaping one-of-a-kind pieces is figuring out how to hold the work and get the cutter to it.

I bought a Canon SD200 Digital Elph for my wife for Christmas. We have an old Olympus 1.3 megapixel that is slow as crap and bulky. The Canon SD200 was about the smallest camera I could find in the ~250 price range with optical zoom, and it had good ratings at cnet.com and amazon.com.

Last year, I got a HP PhotoSmart 145 photo printer, which has an LCD screen and card slots so she could print 4x6 pictures without a computer. One of these types of printers are highly recommended.
