Pope Condemns Same Sex Union as Attack on Society
Yahoo News ^ | December 18, 2004

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope John Paul (news - web sites) on Saturday condemned same sex marriage as an attack on the fabric of society and called on Catholics to combat what he said was aggressive attempt to legally undermine the family.

"Attacks on marriage and the family, from an ideological and legal aspect, are becoming stronger and more radical every day," the 84-year old pontiff said in the unusually strong statement.

"Who destroys this fundamental fabric causes a profound injury to society and provokes often irreparable damage."

The Catholic Church teaches that marriage between a man and a women is sacred and that homosexuality is a sin.

That stance has been under pressure in some of its core constituencies, including the United States and Catholic Spain where the socialist government in October approved a controversial draft law to legalize gay unions.

But a counterattack has begun. In the United States, President Bush (news - web sites) was swept back to power in the November elections with help from U.S. evangelicals and Catholics who agree with the Pope.

Votes for Bush included solid support from the religious right and his win was interpreted by some as a victory for conservative Christians on issues like gay rights and abortion.

The Polish Pope on Saturday also condemned abortion, artificial procreation and equal status for cohabiting couples as undermining the marital state.

"These things that are presented as civilized progress or scientific conquests, in many cases are in fact a defeat for the dignity of human life and for society," his statement read.

Why meet with religious leaders who condemn your God and deny the divinity of Jesus Christ?

Uh, Muslims constitute well over a billion of the earth's population. The Pope has made it a hallmark of his pontificate to reach out to world, and church leaders. His action reflected his desire to keep open the lines of dialogue.

You have no idea what actions might, and might not, bring others to Jesus.

Perhaps you forgot that Jesus reached out to Samaritans, who were the scum of society.

Now, now, don't retreat just yet. I'll bet you have one or two more bits of silly sophistry packed away that you could throw at me.

"The United States will not let the Soviet Union dictate Poland's future with impunity," Reagan wrote the Pope on December 29, 1981.

"I am announcing today additional American measures aimed at raising the cost to the Russians of their continued violence against Poland. … Unfortunately, if these American measures are not accompanied by other Western countries, the Russians may decide to pursue repression, hoping to provoke a rupture within the Western world, while escaping the consequences of our measures. … I therefore ask your assistance in using your own suasion throughout the West in an attempt to achieve unity on these needed measures [economic sanctions on Poland and the Soviet Union]… I hope you will do whatever is in your power to stress these truths to the leaders of the West."

I know, I know, Reagan is just another left wing commie.

Pope John Paul II is not a citizen of the United States of America and his opinons are no more welcome here than are those of the U.N.'s Secretary General.

Many, many people, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, will vehemently disagree with you.

"Sorry but I can't take this man seriously when the Catholic church at large allowed homosexuals unabated freedom to molest children, paid the parents off and they then repeated the same offenses. Later it turns out they were shipped to Rome.

Neither a homosexual "union" or a homosexual molester is okay in God's book but I find it to be a far worse crime to have a church covering up and allowing innocent kids to be molested. Atleast with these perverted "unions" both perverts want this hideous lifestyle choice. This man is a disgrace - okay, pile and flame away at me for highlighting this disgusting hypocrisy that is ON GOING in the Catholic church."America friend persons is persons Persons is not perfecte G-D is perfecte I do know what you write that is what you feel that is good that is what is free Thank you

We know you just want to win the war on terror, and we all do. But each human being on the planet has to make his own decision as to how to participate in this conflict. You do so in your own way, which I respect. I do not doubt that your resolve is true. But the Pope has his own way. We may not always agree with him, but he has been and continues to be effective at raising up world wide value for life and freedom. I'm grateful for what he has done, and I'm sure you will be able to appreciate it as well, once you've given him a second chance. I don't believe that he has said we should not have brought down Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq, by the way. Please re-read what he has said and post it here if you can prove me wrong. Also, I do not believe that he has sided with the PLO as you suggested above. He sides with humanity, and I also do not believe that he has said anything suggestive of abolishing the Jewish state of Israel, either. Please quote him here if you can prove that. What he may fail to do is take stands that are as stringent as you would prefer. I do not consider myself a peacemaker, but Christ did say "blessed are they."

Comparing the inherent violence of Islam to the low social status of the Samaritans during Jesus' time is a non sequitur.

I think you continue to associate religious dogma with human beings who (may only temporarily) subscribe to it.

The Vatican could have been firmer on Hitler , too. Appeasement just never works in the long run.

Is there anyone or any group that you would be offended to see Pope John Paul II reach out to? If you answer, don't do so reflexively.

The pope whined and whined about Iraq during the election.

You need to quit relying on the evening news for your education.

The Pope told Aziz personally, prior to the war, that Iraq needed to comply with UN resolutions or suffer the consequences. Did your comrades Chirac or Schroeder ever say anything remotely resembling that?

"Why would John Paul II have met with Anton LaVey?
My point exactly. Why meet with religious leaders who condemn your God and deny the divinity of Jesus Christ? What is the point? On its own, reason is incapable of bringing anyone to Jesus Christ.

The Pope's visits sound more like the gestures made by politicians. Jesus Christ was no politician. There wasn't a political bone in His Body."Papiez is religijnym person,Jan Pawel II do know what love is love is not evil, G-D is love G-D love persons not one two three four persons all persons that is all persons that is life that is G-D love Thank you :}}}}

You're asking me to denounce a Christian religious leader for practicing what he preaches, what he sincerely believes is Biblical truth? I don't always agree with the pope, if that's what you'd like to know.

The Vaticans reply to Ronald Reagan as delivered by Silverstrini to Haig:

"The Vatican recognizes that the U.S. is a great power with global responsibilities. The United States must operate on the political plane and the Holy See does not comment on the political positions taken by governments. It is for each government to decide its political policies. The Holy See for its part operates on the moral plane. The two planes (politics and morality) can be complementary when they have the same objective. In this case they are complementary because both the Holy See and the United States have the same objective: the restoration of liberty to Poland."

Is it? Are you part of the 44% who think we ought to put some restrictions on innocent American-born Muslim citizens?
