Two Maricopa County sheriff's deputies were shot Thursday during the serving of a search warrant in east Mesa. A suspect was shot by a third deputy.
Deputy Sean Pearce, who is the son of Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, was shot in the abdomen. He was flown to Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, where he underwent surgery to remove part of his large intestine. Deputy Lew Argetsinger was shot in the hand and taken by ambulance to the medical center. Both were stable.
The suspect, Jorge Luis Guerra Vargas, 22, was flown to Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix with nonlife-threatening facial injuries.
According to authorities, detectives with the Pinal County Sheriff's Office wanted to execute a search warrant at the mobile home of a homicide’s investigative lead, but asked Maricopa County SWAT team members to enter first to ensure their safety.
Lt. Dave Trombi said seven members of the team knocked on the door at 111 S. 91st Way at 6:35 a.m., announced their presence in English and Spanish, then broke through the door. They were a short distance inside when a subject opened fire.
Both deputies shot were wearing ballistic body armor, but Pearce was struck in an unprotected spot, Trombi said.
A third deputy returned fire on GuerraVargas, who was alone in the home, Trombi said.
Pinal County Sheriff's Office spokesman Mike Minter said detectives had hoped to obtain evidence pertaining to a recent homicide in Hewlitt Station, a community near Queen Valley.
A hunter called deputies Dec. 5 after he found a body with a gunshot wound to the head buried under a pile of scrap lumber, Minter said.
Investigators found fresh tire tracks on the scene, and the clue led authorities to the mobile home.
Esteban Soto, the investigative lead in the case, was found Thursday in New Mexico and is being detained for questioning there.
Deputies are still working to identify the body, which is described as a 20- to 25-year-old Hispanic male.
Pearce has been on the force for 11 years, Deputy Argetsinger for three years.
Rep. Pearce, said he was in Washington, D.C., testifying on an immigration panel when he was told his son had been shot.
"He is feisty. He will do well," he said. "I guarantee that the moment he is allowed back, he will put that uniform on and be out there doing police work."
Russell Pearce also was shot in the chest and hand in the line of duty about 20 years ago while chasing gang members in Guadalupe.
Efforts to contact Argetsinger's family were unsuccessful.

Police commanders may not want to discuss, much less respond to, the illegal-alien crisis, but its magnitude for law enforcement is startling. Some examples:
• In Los Angeles, 95 percent of all outstanding warrants for homicide (which total 1,200 to 1,500) target illegal aliens. Up to two-thirds of all fugitive felony warrants (17,000) are for illegal aliens.
• A confidential California Department of Justice study reported in 1995 that 60 percent of the 20,000-strong 18th Street Gang in southern California is illegal; police officers say the proportion is actually much greater. The bloody gang collaborates with the Mexican Mafia, the dominant force in California prisons, on complex drug-distribution schemes, extortion, and drive-by assassinations, and commits an assault or robbery every day in L.A. County. The gang has grown dramatically over the last two decades by recruiting recently arrived youngsters, most of them illegal, from Central America and Mexico.
• The leadership of the Columbia Lil’ Cycos gang, which uses murder and racketeering to control the drug market around L.A.’s MacArthur Park, was about 60 percent illegal in 2002, says former assistant U.S. attorney Luis Li. Francisco Martinez, a Mexican Mafia member and an illegal alien, controlled the gang from prison, while serving time for felonious reentry following deportation.

I have been to many states in the south. I have relatives in the southern states, and read a lot. I am sure that, if you are from the south, you have a greater knowledge of southern problems, even if you don't understand their root causes. There are problems with illegals all over the US. I suspect the problems are similar for each state, it is just that the degree of severity is greater in southern states.
"Similar for each state?" Sounds like you've got a real handle on the problem.
The crime of the white woman who cut out the baby of a woman she murdered was also covered ---- lucky for anyone who clicked or posted on that thread she was just a white woman --- otherwise they'd be called racist for showing any disgust at that crime. Maybe not if she was black though --- crime stories involving blacks don't seem to get the same racist accusations made. We're supposed to ignore that many criminals are coming from Mexico to prey on Americans.
Inner city culture has it's bad aspects --- but what of the illegals coming from the slums of Mexico City or from the drug cartel culture --- they certainly do not have a better culture than that of the inner cities here. And what is interesting --- latin rap or latin hip-hop is nothing but an immitation of black inner city culture. But is that any worse than the culture of the narco-trafficantes which influence the popular music from Mexico --- the songs that glorify the drug king-pins that is so popular throughout Mexico and it's population here? Jefe de los jefes, pacas de kilo, el rey de los cielos --- it's not hard to figure out what the popular music of Mexico is all about.
I don't believe it's likely at all that he's from one of the pre-1980's type immigrant or one of the indigenous hispanic families of the SW --- because that population has little violent crime --- unlike those from Mexico.
Mexico has them --- they do little about them --- try Ciudad Juarez where the murders of over 400 women and girls are left unsolved --- many believe because the killers are the sons of the wealthy families of Juarez or the police themselves or the drug cartel rings --- so are protected. The authorities of Mexico allow their Ted Bundys to remain free --- which is why we saw the lynchings of 3 policemen in Mexico City.
He's just doing the job American murderers refuse to do, poor fellow. /sarcasm
I don't know --- but if he's a legal immigrant from Mexico that would show our immigration laws are even worse than we thought. He could just as easily be an anchor baby.
Does it make it a difference even to you that this poor innocent shooter had just murdered another Mexican --- and that's why those awful cops were going after the poor hispanic man? He killed a Mexican --- that at least should bother you.
Exactly --- the SW USA actually had very very low crime rates up until recently -- and they've now got the highest in the USA. People didn't used to lock their doors in the area I'm in ---- but immigration since the 80's has drastically changed that -- and it's iron bars on all the doors and windows. "Hispanics" have told me they would leave their doors unlocked in case a neighbor needed to borrow a cup of sugar while they aere out --- but since so much riff-raff from Mexico has moved over they've all been burglarized and can't live that open friendly life they always had. And that's why you see the border region's residents eager for restrictions on who and what comes over the border.

The bloody revolution is the fault of the elites being unwilling to change their corrupt system --- and why should they when it makes them very very wealthy and they've convinced us they can dump all their social problems onto us?
The recent lynchings in Mexico City and exploding crime rate in Mexico should make us all realize the revolution isn't being prevented by us having open borders and our leaders allowing unlimited immigration from that country --- it might delay it ---- because the elites believe as long as the USA will put no control over immigration, they will not have to make reforms.
Mexico is a very wealthy country with the same kind --- and better in some areas --- natural resouces as we have in the USA. It competes with Great Britain in number of billionaires. Mexicans can feed their families in Mexico---- they might have to overthrow their government in order to do so --- get a government which allows them to irrigate their lands ---- it's interesting --- far less acreas are now being irrigated in Mexico --- yet Mexico has irrigated since before the Europeans came --- why is their government cutting them off irrigation? It's pretty obvious they need a different government.
Not if the rest of us have to pay the free health care and education for that the person from Mexico and his family --- because that employer plans to benefit by paying very little and offering none of the standard employment benefits. Very few employers of the illegals will want their employees if they had to follow the labor laws --- they want to bring in cheap servants that the tax payers must subsidize.
Well --- they did get a pretty bloody revolution in the early 1900s --- but it accomplished nothing of course. In fact the group that was forced out of power was probably better in many ways than what took over power. Porfirio Diaz was a Mexican Indian (100% Oaxacan Indian) --- and it was his presidency they overturned and he had to head over to Spain. Benito Juarez was another pre-Revolution Mexican Indian president --- Zapotec. Unlikely today that an Indian could become president in Mexico.
The reason I think they could become a middle class society --- many (not all of course) of the mestisos are perfectly capable of becoming middle class actually quite quickly --- and Mexican Indians have attained the level of Mexican president in the past. There's no good explanation other than extreme corruption that many of Mexico's poor can only hope to achieve middle class by coming to the USA --- at least some of them reach middle class within one generation --- even less. Mexico certainly has the wealth and natural resources --- but the class system makes it so only the few elites can access those.
What happened to their homes in Mexico? They used to sustain themselves --- 20 to 30 years ago many only heard of the USA and yet were surviving in their own homeland. Why is it okay that they were ripped from their homes in their own homeland and shipped to the USA?
Civil war is a nasty thing. It should be done only as a last resort.
You've lost me. Why do you assume illegals living in the USA could sustain themselves in Mexico, and who uprooted them from Mexico?
Yes ---- why could they not sustain themselves in Mexico? What happens at the Rio Grande that people on one side can sustain themselves yet people on the other side cannot? Even when you get into the south states of Mexico --- where the land is very lush and the growing season is year-round, why can't people sustain themselves? The indigenous people of Mexico were sustaining themselves for hundreds of years in Mexico.
