Two Maricopa County sheriff's deputies were shot Thursday during the serving of a search warrant in east Mesa. A suspect was shot by a third deputy.
Deputy Sean Pearce, who is the son of Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, was shot in the abdomen. He was flown to Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, where he underwent surgery to remove part of his large intestine. Deputy Lew Argetsinger was shot in the hand and taken by ambulance to the medical center. Both were stable.
The suspect, Jorge Luis Guerra Vargas, 22, was flown to Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix with nonlife-threatening facial injuries.
According to authorities, detectives with the Pinal County Sheriff's Office wanted to execute a search warrant at the mobile home of a homicides investigative lead, but asked Maricopa County SWAT team members to enter first to ensure their safety.
Lt. Dave Trombi said seven members of the team knocked on the door at 111 S. 91st Way at 6:35 a.m., announced their presence in English and Spanish, then broke through the door. They were a short distance inside when a subject opened fire.
Both deputies shot were wearing ballistic body armor, but Pearce was struck in an unprotected spot, Trombi said.
A third deputy returned fire on GuerraVargas, who was alone in the home, Trombi said.
Pinal County Sheriff's Office spokesman Mike Minter said detectives had hoped to obtain evidence pertaining to a recent homicide in Hewlitt Station, a community near Queen Valley.
A hunter called deputies Dec. 5 after he found a body with a gunshot wound to the head buried under a pile of scrap lumber, Minter said.
Investigators found fresh tire tracks on the scene, and the clue led authorities to the mobile home.
Esteban Soto, the investigative lead in the case, was found Thursday in New Mexico and is being detained for questioning there.
Deputies are still working to identify the body, which is described as a 20- to 25-year-old Hispanic male.
Pearce has been on the force for 11 years, Deputy Argetsinger for three years.
Rep. Pearce, said he was in Washington, D.C., testifying on an immigration panel when he was told his son had been shot.
"He is feisty. He will do well," he said. "I guarantee that the moment he is allowed back, he will put that uniform on and be out there doing police work."
Russell Pearce also was shot in the chest and hand in the line of duty about 20 years ago while chasing gang members in Guadalupe.
Efforts to contact Argetsinger's family were unsuccessful.

MALDEF Pleased That President Bush Is Taking A Step In The Right Direction
"MALDEF officials yesterday were pleased that President George W. Bush announced a plan to reform the immigration system, and they lauded his move as a step in the right direction."
We catch illegals with cell phone, Mp3 players, jewelry and the latest styles in name brand clothing. Hardly, a poor and impovrished lot without any hope if your ask me.
About two years ago I found a backpack belonging to a young hottie named (seriously) Maria da la Los Angeles. It contained some very nice lingerie and judging from the sizes I would really like to meet her. There were also a number of photos and I have reason to believe she may be struttin' her stuff for Victoria's Secret now -- and easily out earning both of us combined.
"Deport" is winning by a wide margin.
Sure would be..;o).......However Dane's *omission* from the thread is much most obvious (since HE brought the thread to this debate).
This thread is hysterical!
yep, again, they're getting beat up pretty bad.
I disagree. I think 15 million illegals proves you wrong. If the need wasn't here, they would not be here, and they would not be tolerated.
Immigration laws are in place now. You hereby advocate ignoring border control until the laws are changed so that as many or more immigrants from Mexico and Central America are allowed to enter the country legally as are now entering illegally. So your policy boils down to making all the illegal aliens legal aliens.
I advocate changing the immigration laws. I advocate returning illegals who cannot support themselves and those who have broken crimes other than crossing the border.
You had to throw that race-baiting phrase "motivated by racism" in there, didn't you?
I believe many who oppose Dubya's guest worker expansions are motivated by racism. Not all, maybe not most, but definitely many.
What you call race-baiting I call freedom of speech. You have focused on one phrase of one sentence. The rest of my post deals with my reasoning. You can not refute my reason and so you call me a RINO and a traitor and ascribe dishonorable and malicious motives to me based on no evidence whatsoever. This tactic says volumes about the author of this distorted and dishonest interpretation.
Brain washed one note johnny.
Who brainwashed me Einstein? You say Everybody agrees with you. Why have I taken an unpopular position on FR? Because I like bigots calling me an idiot? I'll tell you why. Because I have a duty as an American and a Christian to actually think for myself instead of picking up a pitchfork and marching to the sound of the guns.
"To them keeping Mexicans out is immigration reform."
Yes, because it is Mexicans, in their millions and millions, who are coming here and demanding to be taught in Spanish and to use Spanish in the work place.
Thank you for your honesty. Next time a right fringer tells me that he despises ALL Illegals, not just Mexicans, so much that he's heading to the Canadian border, with his night vision goggles and rifle...I can point him to your comments, and say "Hey Cletus, wrong way!"
They (we) are against the bill as it was passed because it did not go far enough in controlling our borders and they (we) know that it was only by adding what we wanted into a bill that the Senate wanted that we had any chance at all of tightening up our border.
That's brilliant. It's a good bill that does some of what we want...let's send it back it's not good enough. That can be Tancredo's slogan - "It's not good enough." - Tancredo/Byrd 07. S o o o o , were you for the bill before you were against it?
I thought you claimed that this was a serious answer. This is nonsense. Latinos have the same opportunity as everyone else to bring in family and they do so in great numbers.
Then tell me how many Mexicans are legally allowed into America each year?
I have my daughter in an elite private university
Kind of an exclusive university ehh? They don't let just any ol' riff raff, in I bet. May I ask? Did you, perhaps, inherit your wealth??
even if the floodtide of Latino immigration you desire does occur.
I do not want a flood of illegals. I want to let some of the illegals who have families and ties to the community stay on the basis of their work history.
"If we both tighten the border and punish business the effect could be synergistic."
I certainly hope so.
It is obvious that you do not read my posts in a contiguous fashion. Rather you hop from spot to spot, looking for something to attack. Reread my post then try thinking.
Mexico would rightfully resent it if millions upon millions of Americans moved into their country, displacing Mexicans and demanding that Mexico change its culture to an American culture. So would any society worthy of the name.
Mexico is not America and if you knew anything about American history you could not make this statement. Your argument is the same one made when the Italians came, and the Polish, and the Jews, and many more when their home culture and America's ever evolving culture clashed. In each case ideals like sanctity of life, rule of law, and love of God remained.
We are also a nation of laws......so WHY is our gov't *selective* about which laws it wants to enforce.
Do you support all tax evaders ??? Or only the illegal ones & those who employ them.
No doubt I have, but I have not gone up to one to demand identification so how could I tell?
Thank you for the interesting link. I don't quite understand your comments though. Are you suggesting MALDEF is a racist organization? Please explain if so.
I have been to many states in the south. I have relatives in the southern states, and read a lot. I am sure that, if you are from the south, you have a greater knowledge of southern problems, even if you don't understand their root causes. There are problems with illegals all over the US. I suspect the problems are similar for each state, it is just that the degree of severity is greater in southern states.
That's not glee. That's emphasis. Many of us are furious about the damage that these people do, and we are frustrated that no one pays attention to the dangers of letting this problem continue.
Your support for GW's amesty is predicated on the idea that those already in the US illegally will all become law abiding and everyone else in Mexico will follow US immigration law. It didn't happen with the last amnesties, it isn't going to happen with this one.
what?
When you let illegals stay, you get floods of illegals. Your plan can't work. It never has, it's always failed.
It's like you're Neville Chamberlain III, promoting the new and improved appeasement. Some things just don't work. Rewarding lawbreakers doesn't discourage lawbreaking.
Sierra Vista, Arizona. October 16, 2004.
I had friends who would have disputed that point if they had lived through their encounter with a truck full of illegals. Six dead, 26 injured; 15 had to be flown out by helicopter to the regional trauma centers in Tucson and Phoenix. Two months later six are still hospitalized.
The taxpayer paid the bill on the Mexican casualties. Not so for the families of the American citizens mangled or killed in this incident.
Two of the four coyotes involved are now facing the death penalty.
You betcha. Click around their site. MALDEF is the Latino equivalent of the NAACP, a group of Leftist, race hustling agitators.
You don't know this? LOL
It's like believing that if one just flaps their arms hard enough, this time they will fly.
The Klan with a tan.
"For the race, everything. For those outside the race, nothing."
Did you take in that snake?
Dubya wants to make the pie higher. America has been losing manufacturing jobs for many years. If they were not being replaced with slave labor in China they would be replaced with machines. That's just life. Life is not fair. We cannot keep those jobs without finding labor that is cheaper than free.
I am for free trade. NAFTA evolved from Reagan's North American accord which called for the free flow of people between America, Canada, and Mexico for the purposes of expanding trade, promoting tourism, and making the pie higher. After NAFTA took effect in 1994 our economy prospered so well a rapist won re-election to the POTUS.
Republicans and rats both agree it rocks. How can you not be for NAFTA?
