PHOENIX -- One of two inmates accused of taking a pair of guards hostage in a prison watchtower said Friday he would protest a judge's ruling by not attending his trial next month.
Ricky Wassenaar, charged with attempted murder and sexual assault in the January standoff, said he was reacting to a decision requiring him to wear electronic monitors during his trial. He is abandoning plans to represent himself, he said.
Shackled and under the watch of six SWAT team members during a pretrial hearing Friday, Wassenaar asked that he be allowed inside the courtroom without any type of restraints during trial, arguing they would prejudice the jury against him.
Prosecutor Jeannette Gallagher called Wassenaar an escape risk and said he shouldn't be allowed to roam the courtroom freely.
Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Warren Granville offered Wassenaar the option of wearing an electronic stun belt and ankle monitor instead of handcuffs. The devices would not be seen by jurors, but Wassenaar complained they are uncomfortable and would hinder his performance.
Wassenaar, 41, asked the judge to reinstate a court-appointed attorney to represent him.
He and fellow inmate Steven Coy, 40, allegedly took the two correctional officers hostage at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis in Buckeye on Jan. 18. The male hostage was released after one week and the female hostage was let go when they surrendered Feb. 1. Lois Fraley, who has spoken publicly about the ordeal, said she was raped by both inmates.

Well, I'm stuned! I never thought those bracelets were like that beeber I picked up in Tijuana. Hinder his performance, HA HA!
What a dumba$$. At least he did himself the favor of forgoing a pro se (I believe it's called) defense. Even a middling P.D. should be able to protect this guy from himself.
And let Fraley cut the belt off him after the trial with a very large and sharp knife. "Now hold still ... whoops, you moved!"
--the prison administraor and the Governess of Arizona could use some eloctroshock too, for their refusal to allow sharpshooters to end the situation soon after it started---with bullets to the head of the hostagetakers--
just one more reason why females shouldn't be guards in a male prison...
Yeah...those male prisoners NEVER rape men.
If I was in the jury,,, I tell the judge,,, HANG HIM .....
We have one of the worst governors in the country, a Donna Shalala lookalike dyke and a radical lib who helped the feminists beat up on Clarence Thomas. But she is exactly what we need according to our "betters" like John McCain, Jim Kolbe, and the Az. People's Republic newspaper.
Yeah...those male prisoners NEVER rape men.
Could you offer a source or a link documenting where male inmates took male guards hostage in the joint, and raped the male guards?
Take your time.
Do they make stun belts in chastity belt models? Sounds fitting, if they do.
Of course it makes sense. Inmates shank and kill each other all the time too. Big deal. The point is, women guards have no place in a male joint.
New Mexico, I think it was 1980 or so.
Link or source, means lets see it.
I am reminded of my firefighter friend who is about 6'4, solidly built (muscle, not fat) and drives the pumper truck. I don't think the fact that she has a vagina instead of a penis makes a bit of difference as to whether or not she can do the same job than the smaller men in the unit.
I will not give you a link. I will freep mail you.
Rape is very unusual during prison hostage situations. Most of the incidents are over quickly and involve 1 or 2 inmates and 1 employee or visitor. Incidents like New Mexico where several staff were sexually assaulted and this one in Arizona are rare exceptions.
I read the AGs report in NM and worked with a group of Lts and Sgts. I'll vouch for the sexual assaults. But that incident was far from typical.
Uh, just a wild guess, but I'd say that is due to the lack of female guards to rape in prison hostage take overs.
Freepmail coming.
