As part of the legislative compromise to pass the intelligence reform bill signed into law by the President today, the administration and Congressional leaders have promised to attach to the first 'must pass' legislation of the new year a controversial provision that was rightly dropped from the intelligence reform bill -- this provision would effectively prevent the states from issuing driver's licenses to illegal aliens by requiring 'legal presence' status for holders of licenses to be used as 'national ID.'
"Although this provision is being touted by its supporters as a security measure, its implementation in practice will be to undermine national security because it ignores three widely- recognized principles of counter-terrorism security: the shrinking perimeter of defense; the need to allocate resources to more likely targets; and the economics of fraud.

The press is on. We will not yield
What part of illegal alien does this author not understand. If you are illegal, not only do you not deserve a drivers license, you dont deserve to live here.
Ditto. If you are not here legally, you should be forced into hiding, not greeted with open arms and special government programs that are paid for by LEGAL American residents!!
Driving is a privilege, not a right. By breaking the law to enter the country, these people have proven they aren't worthy of the privileges of being a citizen of this great nation.
Go home, and try again....legally!!!
Oh, heck. Why have borders anyway? Why not save the money, and, while we're at it, let's have vending machines for driver's licenses and GIVE ILLEGALS THE CHANGE THEY NEED FOR THE MACHINES!!!
2) Go to the address on the license and arrest them!
This is a law enforcement issue!
Get that camels nose out of my tent.
That says me.
I say that if you are not a citizen of the US, get your license in your own country and we will honor it. There is no need to get a license here. That is the point being missed by all these do gooders.
This is a non issue, unless of course the real motive is to legalize millions of trespassers.
I think the real issues ought to be whether it is legal to "discriminate" against non-citizens, particularly those from predominantly Muslim countries. I say hell yes. The other one should be whether there should be a form of national ID card. I say hell no, except for foreigners from countries who harbor terrorists. As for illegals, if an illegal is trying to blow up things and kill people, he's a terrorist scumbag who should be deported or turned into dogfood. If he isn't, then he isn't a terrorist and isn't relevant to the whole point of this discussion in the first place.
Correct. Illegal means illegal go get the hell out or we should throw you out. The trouble is, our so called leaders don't get it.
The dems want more voters and the republicans want cheap labor so they will stay. Vote Tom Tancredo for pres in 2008 ! Finally, someone with balls.
Bad for national security? Ummm, if you don't have a LEGAL document saying you belong here, then they can leave. That seems to strength national security, actually.
People who are forced into hiding are magnets for crime and all forms of exploitation, the very things that anti-immigration people claim to be concerned about.

Well, for some freepers, a janitor from Oaxaca City is just as dangerous and threatening as a madrassa student with bomb-making knowledge from Cairo.
--as Sonny Buono so succinctly put it when asked about policy toward illegals: "What's there to ask--they're illegal!"
What would you do with yourself if the state made it illegal for you to work? Starve?
