Major East Coast Storm In The Works
Accuweather.com ^ | 12/16/04 | Accuweather

Posted on 12/16/2004 9:51:26 AM PST by CollegeRepublican

From Accuweather.com: There are some definite signs that a major storm will take shape along the Carolina coastline Sunday. From there, it will rapidly strengthen and spin northward up the coast Sunday night and Monday. Fuel for the storm will be a direct confrontation between very cold air charging southward through the Great Lakes and mild air streaming in from off the Atlantic Ocean. The clash of air masses will be the product of an unusually large amplification of the jet stream. This storm could have major impact on shopping and travel late in the weekend and early next week. When the exact track of the storm becomes more evident, AccuWeather.com will bring you the specifics on timing and actual snow accumulations.

This is just a heads up for a possible nor'easter set-up for late this weekend. I have not seen much about this, but it has the potential to cause travel/shopping problems during the final countdown to Christmas.

Check the link for a good graphic of the weather pattern on Sunday into Monday.

Here is some raw meterologist speak from the noaa site.

AS FAR AS THE POTENTIAL STORM FOR THE SUNDAY NIGHT/MONDAY PERIOD GOES...IT WILL CONTINUE TO BE A TRICKY FORECAST ESPECIALLY THIS FAR OUT. THERE ARE A TON OF MODELS SHOWING DIFFERENT SETS OF DETAILS. HOWEVER...ONE HAS TO REMEMBER THAT THE PIECES OF ENERGY THAT ARE SLATED TO SPIN UP THE COASTAL ARE LIKELY COMING FROM TWO DIFFERENT AREAS THAT ARE COVERED VERY SPARSELY BY REAL-TIME DATA.

FROM WHAT I CAN GATHER...ONE PIECE OF ENERGY GETS SPIT OFF OF THE POLAR VORTEX OVER NUNAVUT AND RIDES SOUTH IN THE NRN STREAM LATE WEEK/EARLY WEEKEND. THE OTHER PIECE IS WELL OFFSHORE OF ALASKA/WRN CANADA AT THE MOMENT (IF NOT OVER EASTERN RUSSIA). THE TWO PIECES OF ENERGY EVENTUALLY PHASE SOMEWHERE OVER THE ERN USA LATE THIS WEEKEND. SINCE THE ENERGIES SUPPOSEDLY RESPONSIBLE FOR SPINNING UP A POTENTIAL COASTAL STORM ARE CURRENTLY OVER DATA-SPARSE AREAS OF THE NRN HEMISPHERE...WE SHOULD NOT TRY TO FOCUS ON MODEL DETAILS AT THE MOMENT. TAKING A LOOK AT TRENDS IS PROBABLY MORE APPROPRIATE AT THIS POINT. IN ALL ACTUALITY...GIVEN HOW FAR OUT WE ARE STILL...IT'S PRETTY AMAZING THAT ALL MODELS AVAILABLE TO US ARE SPINNING UP A STORM IN THE SAME GENERAL VCNTY. GIVEN WHERE THE ENERGY IS AT THIS POINT...HOW CAN WE TRY TO FORECAST A RAIN/SNOW LINE? AT THIS JUNCTURE...ANYTHING IS STILL POSSIBLE. MORE ON THIS DURING THE AFTERNOON. -MLE

Joe Bastardi at Accuweather had been talking about this for days now. He's alluded to the fact that the pattern is very ripe for at least one really big storm to hit the east during this pattern. He started pointing to the possibility of some major weather-makers coming up the coast last week sometime.

That's a good team up there. They do great work! Their "Professional" site is a good winter time investment at $10-$15 per month. I get to hear about the bad weather days and sometimes weeks ahead of time!

Regards,

Jim

No offense to anyone counting on pre-Christmas sales or travel, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get up here. I'm in dire need of some snowplowing money! Bring it on!

Although with my luck it'll pass to the west and bring us rain.

If only Bush had signed the Kyoto protocols...this wouldn't be happening. Bush is punishing New England by destroing their Christmas.

Well, I am down here in Maryland and I would love to get some snow on the ground. Christmas and snow just need to go together, plus it is easier to track deer in the snow. I need another one in my freezer before the end of the year.

"New England at Christmas under a blanket of snow shore is purty."

Note that snowmen in MA are few and far between. When I asked why, most said that they saw someone build one once. ??

This sounds similar to the conditions during "The Perfect Storm".

Just as long as it holds off hitting Pittsburgh until after Saturday, I'm happy. I need good weather to get home.
