Even certified Hollywood liberals were reeling after Chevy Chase's potty-mouthed Bush-bashing Tuesday night at the Kennedy Center, where the actor hosted an awards ceremony staged by People for the American Way.
For most of the evening, Chase was his usual comedic self, delivering lines like "This just in -- resignations in the upper echelon of the Bush administration. The Bush sisters have resigned and are being replaced by Paris and Nicky Hilton. Back for more news later."
After actors Alec Baldwin and Susan Sarandon delivered speeches accepting their Defender of Democracy awards, Chase took the stage a final time and unleashed a rant against President Bush that stunned the crowd. He deployed the four-letter word that got Vice President Cheney in hot water, using it as a noun. Chase called the prez a "dumb [expletive]."

He hurt his back jumping the shark in Christmas Vacation
Is that really his name?
He's Chevy Chase and I'm not!
They live in a different universe. They are both blind and deaf to real life.
After actors Alec Baldwin and Susan Sarandon delivered speeches accepting their Defender of Democracy awards.
I'm not sure whether this is pathetic or funny. Two actors. Defenders of democracy. Right.
I have a 57 Chevy. He should change his name as to not soil my classic.
Meanwhile, the other host of the evening, the newly blond Cynthia Nixon, told us she had a more gracious message for Bush: "Don't just listen to people who are telling you yes, listen to the people who are telling you no!"
I couldn't agree more. The president should listen to the people who are telling him 'no'. Like those who are saying, "No more porous borders, no more confiscatory taxes, no more coddling Kofi & company, and no more nicey-nice with the congressional leftists."
The more these people do this, the more it just cements in people's minds that George W. Bush was the RIGHT CHOICE in this year's election. It may also help those who 'held their nose' and voted for Kerry to wonder if they made the right decision, after all.
"This is the heart and soul of America" John Kerry-September 2004
I don't know if it was just trying to 'bond' with them or if he actually believed it!
I wonder what killed Chevy's acting career? Was it the drugs? Was it the drinking? I think it was the acting.
When a (perhaps THE) significant screen actor of Chevy Chase's caliber says something it's bound to impact. We may not fully understand what this speech brings to our culture for, perhaps, years to come. As his multitude of biographers will no doubt note, this may very well be a shining capstone of his incredibly luminious career.
Well, what else does this one note Johnny have to do? He certainly isn't on the wanted list for movies or TV.
Just keep these people talking, and make sure they get plenty of exposure. The more they reveal of themselves, the more the American people recoil in disgust.
And you wonder why the entertainment industry can't figure out why their influence in elections are waning and how inappropriate statements can harm a career in no time flat (read: Dixie Chicks).
Chevy Chase has had a problem in the past with addiction. I wonder if he's back on something. Sounds really inappropriate, even for them.
