Do this, Democrats. Announce you will apply pressure to antireligious zealots throughout the country. You have nothing to lose but a silly and culturally unhelpful reputation as the party that is hostile to religious expression. What you could gain is respect and gratitude. Pick up that Christmas tree, Terry, take it outside and put a star on top, stand next to it, yell Merry Christmas and ring a bell. That's a manipulation of symbols that would actually make sense.

If the Democrats were smart, they'd stand up for Christmas.
The Democrats are NOT smart. They STILL don't get it! I am a Former Democrat who saw the light, and it wasn't at the democrat house.
The key word here is "core". They can't stop the anti-religious bigotry. It's what they are.
What a great article!
Another good one by Mrs. Noonan.
Peggy is brilliant!
She's hit the bullseye yet again.
The Dims would lose half of their base at the DU if they came out in favor of Christmas! They cannot afford to dilute their hatred of the Religious Right and everything it stands for with a pro-Christmas message.
Peggy should quit helping the Democrats. However, they'll probably consider the source and redouble their assualt on Christmas.
Well and good if a person stands for what they believe in, but terrible and transparent, to true believers, when they stand just to be associated with something that they think will get them ahead.
But they won't do it, of course. The Democrats won't come out in favor of Christmas. Because doing so would upset the ACLU lawyers and the multi-culturists in academe. Any expression of religion is anathema to the gay community and to the socialist atheists.
Too bad.
It is advice that most Democratic leaders, large and small, simply cannot follow. Nor do they want to.
This party has become so utterly sinister and delusional that it cannot think as normal people do.
The horrifying thing is that it still gets so many idiots to vote for it.
Nice article; thanks for posting it! I think it is hilarious that the left and those who are in journalism (same thing, actually) think that President Bush is speaking in code to evangelicals. What a hoot! Everyone knows the real code words to get people to vote for him in this election were: I'm not my opponent.
