LAKE COUNTY, Fla. -- A Lake County mom convicted of simple assault after a school bus camera caught her beating a student who had gotten into a fight with her daughter didn't show up for her sentencing Tuesday.

The video, which was recorded in October, shows three girls throwing punches at the back of a school bus as a woman in a white shirt, Rita Gooden, walks back. The camera shows Gooden push her daughter out of the way, then strike another girl, Cassandra Ross. Ross appears to be pinned to a back seat out of view of the camera as the apparent beating continues.Gooden walks off the bus in full view of the camera shouting, "One more time."Ross then walks up to the front of the bus and can be heard telling the driver, "I'm bleeding because of her. Look what she (expletive) did to me."Ross's mother was furious Gooden failed to show up for court."This woman's being charged with simple assault. There's nothing simple about it. She tried to kill my child," she said.Gooden faces up to a year behind bars.

That is not what happened here.

The women's daughter (and a friend) go to the back of the bus and both start beating on this girl. Then the mom gets on the bus. She observes for a few seconds, then decided her daughter is not do a good enough job, pushes her away and then starts hitting the girl.

The girls look, to me, like there are in middle school about 14.

what a coincidence.. you were beat (i know.. it was just punishment not beating) as a child and now you think children should be beat (i know.. just punished not beat). what a coincidence.

Oh yes, there are lots of glorious examples of what the age of "Time-Out" and go "Go sit in the happy chair for 5 minutes and think about what you did" has wrought. I wonder how many of the great people who made this nation what it is today were subjected to the "strict" discipline of a time-out and that is why they became great. I do not know how you are raising your kids, but if they are not subjected to a swat on the ass every once in a while, they probably are the ones screaming on the floor at Wal-Mart.

Let me make sure I understand you: You want more then a year in prison and the state to take away her children, because she hit a teenager who was beating up her child?

Maybe I stayed up too late, but this seems like a poorly written article. My first reading had me believe that the mother intervened in her own daughter's attack. After reading the comments, I reread and understood how others read she joined the attack.
