Poll: Hillary Trails Generic Republican

Pollster Scott Rasmussen has some good news for conservatives who fear "Clinton III: The Return of Hillary."

Only 39 percent of voters would choose her for president in 2008, while 46 percent would back any Republican who runs against her, according to a Rasmussen survey conducted from December 3 – 5.

While polls against any generic candidate typically change when the candidate is named, polling below 40 pefcent is not a good omen for Hillary.

Indeed, her favorable rating barely edges her unfavorable by a margin of 45 to 42 percent - despite in the fact that she has earned decent marks as a Senator and is trying to move to the center on issues like immigration and national security.

The fact that 87 percent of voters already have an opinion about her is perhaps the most telling factor.

Rasmussen has bad news for John Kerry as well.

The same poll indicates that 42 percent of Democrats would like to nominate Hillary in 2008, compared to a mere 16 percent who'd like to give the Massachusetts liberal a second chance. 51 percent of Democrats believe that they need a centrist candidate in 2008.

I think McCain is such a loose cannon and he is as dangerous as Hillery for other reasons.

At least if Hillery got elected, there would be hope for another "real" Republican to run against her in 2012. If McCain got nominated and elected, he would be bale to run for two terms.

McCain screwed up big time with McCain-Feingold. It really helps the Dems. He is against gun shows and gun show sales. He supports illegal invaders. He might be strong on defence, but I don't trust his judgement. I think he is a loose cannon more interested in his popularity with Dems and the liberal press than in fostering a Republican agenda.

His latest attacks agsint Rumsfeld were most inappropriate.

That was a long time ago and RIchard Nixon despite his faults was head and shoulders above McGovern. I see little distinction between McCain and Hitlery, politically.

Translation: Hillary needs a significant 3rd Party candidate in the 2008 race in order to have a chance of winning by plurality.

Which is why she's running right on illegal immigration - to try and split off GOP voters on this issue. Not necessarily to her - but into a new party and political movement with immigration, outsourcing, and H1-B and L-1 visa issues at its core.

Vote for a third party conservative then. Never stay home.

The fewer the votes, the more complacent the political establishment becomes.

I want Hillary to run... it would be the best thing that the Dems could do.

I'd laugh so hard, I would need a reinforced jock strap to keep from getting a hernia.

I'm a CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN.

McCain is hardly a Republican and far from a conservative. See my prior responses.

(I KNEW I should have worn my asbestos suit when I posted that.)

RINOs are the bane of the Republican Party. They are philosphical Democrats who call themselves Republicans. Sometimes they are useful - as in keeping control of the Senate and House Committees. But they are of little use otherwise. Supporting them for important offices is counterproductive. Sure, it keeps Dems out. But by supporting them, you are assuring more of them will run - and get elected in the future.

Oh, I totally agree that McCain is one of the biggest slimeballs to disgrace the Republican Party. But c'mon, I KNOW you don't seriously mean you'd vote for Hillary instead. That's like shooting yourself in the head in order to avoid being mugged.

The hildebeast was actually a Goldwater Republican before the university system got a hold of her. This radical transformation to a radical is an interesting and sad footnote in her miserable life.

What does is say about the Democrat party when the most "moderate" candidate they can think of is a lifelong Marxist?

I applaud and agree with your sentiment in general. However, just to set the record straight, Hillary WAS a "Goldwater Girl" while growing up in Park Ridge, which was, at that time, primarily a white collar NW Chicago suburb. It was when she went off to the NE snob womens school, Wellesley, that she took a HUGE HARD TURN to the left, thanks to the likes of Saul Alinsky.
