A day in the life of President Bush (photos) 12/14/04

TODAY'S HIGHLIGHT: GWB awarded the nation's highest civilian honor -- the Presidential Medal of Freedom -- Ambassador L. Paul "Jerry" Bremer, former CIA Director George Tenet, and retired U.S. Army General Tommy Franks.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: General Tommy Franks was raised in Midland, Texas -- nothing wrong with that. (Laughter.) I didn't know him then, but Laura and he went to the same high school. In those days, some people in Midland wondered about Tommy's future. It sounds familiar. (Laughter.) At a recent high school reunion, Tommy's old principal told the General, "You weren't the brightest bulb in the socket," to which the General replied, "Ain't this a great country?" (Laughter.) -- President George W. Bush, Presidential Medal of Freedom Ceremony, 12/14/04

Enjoy your visit to Sanity Island.

I meant to direct my post at #57 to everyone (including Emily)!

OK, now I'm off to bed!

I think the only ones left might be family owned. But they are disappearing fast. There are a couple here in San Antonio that are family owned but they don't have the fountain. They are just real small old stores that sell prescription drugs and otc drugs and perfume and first aid stuff. It is sad.

Hi Pol, I just got home and saw your post. I grew up in the New York City metro area, so I'm sure familiar with cold winters and lots of snow. Moved here in 1976 and have never gone back. Despite all of California's problems, the worst of which is that Marxist bunch infesting our legislature, I sure do love living here.

...moving in less than two months to a beautiful pasture in the middle of the ranch my husb. has his cattle at...

Sounds truly lovely. I adore the Pacific, but I don't really like urban living. Only live here because this is where the jobs are. If I had my dream home, it would be kind of like the Reagan ranch. In a rural area overlooking the Pacific.

I am closer to the Pacific.

I have imagined your view a number of times in my mind's eye -- and your cat. :-)

Some people, I think, may never get over President Bush's re-election.

They'll get over it. All too soon, political junkies will be focusing on the 2006 senate and house races. Then the next presidential cycle starts to gradually ramp up. Our beloved Dubya will begin the transition from a current president to an historical figure toward the end of 2007, just as the next crop of presidential wannabes start traipsing around New Hampshire and Iowa.

And so it goes.

As for me, I don't think I'll ever care about another president this much again.

Hey, we still have drug store like that in town! It may be slightly more gift oriented but everyone knows everyone and I love the fountain!

If you are ever down the freeway, stop by.
I will later fr mail you my address.
If you have a day free in early Jan. we could
go out whale watching. The boats are at Broadway pier
and carry several hundred. Fun watching the daulphins
swim along the boat on the way out. Only go
3 miles out and the Calif gray whales are leaping
out of the water and then heading down. Just great
to see.

He is not just going to be a historical figure but a great historical figure. I think we are living in the time of a political giant!

Boy he sure resembles his father in the limo picture!

He does look a lot like his dad from some angles. Dubya at about 20 and his father at about 20 looked almost like twins. But if you look closely at Dubya now, observe his features and his mother's, he really resembles Barbara more and more.

Pol, thank you so much for your kind invitation. I'd love to visit. Don't know when I'd be able to get down to SD, though. Let's play it by ear.

I think snow is overrated too. It is very pretty and skiing and winter sports are fun, but wait till you get out on the road :)

For those of you who didn't get to see it, it's on again a couple of times this week on HGTV - - Christmas at the White House. They showed how they decorated and then went through some of the rooms when they were complete. Gorgeous! I'll bet it's breathtaking in person.

I do live in Waimanalo. On the beach yet!

On my way home from work in town I passed Sandy Beach. So many surfers.

The big surf hit the north shore today. Waimanalo looks pretty calm.

He is not just going to be a historical figure but a great historical figure.

I wholeheartedly agree. Have said before when the occasion arose that the presidency of George W. Bush is already one of the most signficant in U.S. (and world) history. (I use the term "significant" rather than "great," because the latter term is so overused and subjective.) If he can pull off even half of what he hopes to this 2nd term, his historical stature will be immense.

I have a cousin who disagrees with everything I believe. For the longest time we never talked and he really hates my dad, but finally he started writing me email. Now we have an incessant argument going. And when either of us get tired of it we just stop for a day or two.
It must be hard to have it be someone your close to.
Congratulations on your new job!

Right now we live in a "town" of 1000 people. No stoplights. One grocery store, not open evenings or Sundays. Three bars. And believe it or not . . . I'm tired of "city" living and sooooo excited to live in the country where I can see millions and millions of stars. It's truly my dream come true and I thank God every day He made it possible.

What we saw of the Reagan ranch during the funeral looked just beautiful!

Do you remember that hunky Secret Service guy who was on the President's detail in the first couple of years? I saw a picture on the Presidential Prayer Team website of a man who is now head of the ATF, and it looks very much like that guy we used to swoon over! ;o)

I don't remember his name from that website. Did we ever know the guy's name who guarded the President?
