Kerry's win official in California

More than a month after Americans voted to re-elect President Bush, delegates to the Electoral College across the country were making it official Monday by casting ballots based on how their states voted. California's 55 electors played it straight during proceedings held in the state Assembly chambers, unanimously choosing Democrat John Kerry and his running mate, John Edwards, despite the futility of the exercise.

But earlier in the day, some of those same electors were mixing it up outside the state Capitol in a protest that attracted hundreds of marchers and sign wavers - some saying the Electoral College should be scrapped, others saying the popular vote itself can't be trusted because of trouble with voting equipment and minority disenfranchisement.

"I think the Electoral College is obsolete and we should be able to have our votes counted - and counted accurately," said Chuck Lowery of Oceanside, who served as secretary of the state delegation to the Electoral College. "If Kerry had won, it would be the same issue," Lowery insisted. "Everyone who voted for Bush in California, their votes didn't count because of the Electoral College."

The protest, however, was made up overwhelmingly of Democrats, Green Party members and others who opposed Bush's re-election.

One of the event organizers, Cheryl Lilienstein, a Bay Area Democratic activist, said similar protests were being organized across the country.

Protesters also encouraged electors to voice their objections when they voted.

Nothin' to it Chuck. Propose a Constitutional Amendment, get it through both houses of Congresss, and get 2/3 of the states to approve it.

Sure, but that's not much help because liberals think Amendments get passed by them parading around in the streets with paper mache heads holding offensive signs while doing some really bad street-theater.

"Everyone who voted for Bush in California, their votes didn't count because of the Electoral College."

So let me get this straight... because my candidate lost, my vote didn't count? What kind of logic is this?

Um...correction...it has to pass each house of Congress by 2/3rds, it has to be ratified by 3/4s of the states...which is why it will NEVER happen.

Bush won the popular vote, too, Chuck. How are ya going to challenge that?

Why don't you guys just sit around and count votes for the next four years so you'll have something to do and we won't have to listen to you?

"Yet another Pointless Protest."

I think we should protest pointless protests! I didn't get my way!

While we're at it, can anyone help these people figure out why there were only voting irregularities in states that Bush won?

Well, maybe if that California businessman who tried to pass an amendment in COLORADO to split the electoral vote had passed it in CALIFORNIA, his own state, instead, maybe their votes would have "counted". Ya think?

Quick, someone send that suggestion to protest warriors.

I can just see their new sign - "I am protesting pointless protesting."

If we couldn't convince these people to take showers and cut their hair in the Sixties, what makes you think we can debate a hugh and series topic like elections with them? They aren't like us -- they live on another planet.
