For the more than 230,000 men who develop prostate cancer annually in the US, there's hopeful news - a revolutionary type of photodynamic therapy developed in Israel has shown great promise - and could eventually be used to treat a myriad of other cancers as well.

Nice find. This and a recent medication for childhood leukemia treatment are two success stories in the battle against cancer.

"Novel Israeli treatment zaps tumors using light and pigment"

Can it be used on Palestinian terrorists? Not to, you know, cure them, but to, you know, "cure" them?

Not to rain on their parade but photodynamic therapy has been around for about 10 years.

No wonder the Palestinians can't get over it. Any Israeli 13 year old has more brain power under his yarmulke than the entire population of the refugee camps. Medicine, physics, software and intelligence operations - poor "Palestine" (another name given to Israel in her history) will never be able to pull their weight. Not even if they magically elected a decent human being as a leader.

This is an improvement on existing therapy. From the article
The drawback of most forms of Photodynamic therapy (PDT) to date is that they are effective only against relatively flat and thin tumors, such as certain types of skin and bladder cancers. In addition, the drug stays in the body for a long time, requiring patients to stay out of sunlight for lengthy periods following treatment. However, the new drug, developed by scientists at Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science - and now being clinically tested - has none of these drawbacks. It is based on chlorophyll, the green pigment that plants use for photosynthesis. "Chlorophyll is designed by nature to harvest solar energy for photosynthesis, so it has high absorption of light," explained Prof. Avigdor Scherz of the Weizmann Institute's Plant Sciences Department, who together with Prof. Yoram Salomon of the Biological Regulation Department, invented the new photo-sensitive drug, WST09. The chlorophyll pigment has the great advantage of being able to absorb near-infra-red light, which penetrates more deeply and efficiently than other wavelengths. The result: A single illuminated optical fiber can reach and eradicate a tumor with a diameter of up to 4 centimeters; larger tumors can be treated by using several fibers. This ability makes the treatment a suitable weapon against solid tumors that have, to date, evaded other photosensitive drugs.

Yes, but the article mentions the it overcomes two disadvantages to the older methods:

1) Is able to treat larger tumors due to the greater penetration of near IR.
2) Drug leaves the body within hours rather than days, which allows the patient to be in the sun rather than having to stay inside for an extended period of time.

Sounds better than the older drugs.

I like your idea. Just pass out a bunch of goodies laced with a version of this stuff that binds to every cell in their bodies and then have them pass through a "checkpoint" that has a set of very bright near-IR bulbs in it. A few hours later, no more cells!

Since terrorists are selfish jerks, we could drop the goodies from planes. The terrorists will run and grab the goodies from the women and children for themselves. Better yet, mark the boxes, "These goodies are for women and children only! Not for consumption by terrorists!"

Of course, nowadays, the women are getting into the 'bidness' themselves.

Bad news for the Protestant church boycotters.

They are free to boycott this treatment and use the Palestinian cure for cancer instead.

FRmail me to be added or removed from this Judaic/pro-Israel ping list.

No wonder the Palestinians can't get over it. Any Israeli 13 year old has more brain power under his yarmulke than the entire population of the refugee camps.

Surely environment has something to do with it. Jews didn't achieve so much while living in rural villages in tsarist Russia, but achieved much living in Western Europe. Likewise, it's hard to achieve anything while living in a Palestinian refugee camp.

That said, is it possible to discuss anything coming out of Israel without gratuitous slams against Palestinians? I knew people don't like to admit it, but they're God's children too -- why, some of them are even Christian!

The Palestinians will never use any treatment that involves pigment. Pigment is obviously another (and for once, not so clever) Zionist misspelling of 'pig meat', and thus is designed to lure trusting Palestinians into defilement.

Every left wing lunatic who hates Israel, should have a personal ban on this treatment if they develop prostatic cancer.
