On Hannity and Combs, Sean responded to the liberals keeping the declaration of independence out of the schools, by calling for parents to take thier kids out of government schools. Home school bump.

I googled, but couldn't find a list of religions recognized by the IRS as tax exempt. I think that would be a place to start...
However, the idea of starting up a string of government sponsored madrassas (sp?) here scares the crap out of me...
Seems to me that would better isolate the problem, eh?!
BTW, the question about an Islamic fundie school has been addressed long ago. The states all have standards relating to the curriculum. Then there are examinations. Presumably such a school would meet the standards.
We have such a school in Fairfax county ~ some of the kids in this neighborhood have attended. The only complaint has been that the school does not have organized athletic teams.

Well said. There's no justifiable reason for not allowing school choice. School choice is being stopped by unionized teachers who would rather have a relatively easy, soft job with three months vacation than work for a parochial school for a private school where they would have to teach to rigorous standards or go elsewhere. I know some teachers will say that they work really hard and it's a tough job, but that's probably only true in tough inner-city schools. The teachers in my schools in suburban San Diego had it really easy and they knew it. Until you've worked a tough coporate job like being a management consultant or a high-tech engineer in a demanding company, you don't know what a tough job is.

Just kidding, lady. It's good to know there are many good, conservative mothers out there. And I still like vouchers, but durasell has a good point.

The problem I have is they are not "government" schools they are "our" schools. How we educate our kids is everyones concern. Unless everyone is well (ok somewhat)educated this society is lost...

Well, if someone want's to put their kid into a Wiccan school, let them, the government can then regulate and test schools to make sure that they are meeting the minimum requirements and such... Choice is the American way

Home schoolers have been calling public schools government schools for at least 15 years.
I think that communities used to view them as "our schools" and they were a focal point in the community. You went to the same school as your older brother and father attended. I know I did. But now people more around a lot. A kid might have four or five different schools by the time he graduates from high school.
I'm for the Andy Carnegie philosophy -- remember, he built libraries, but made the local communities by the books, presumably books that met community standards. The same model should be applied to schools.
"Happens"? Why should anything "happen"? They can run their schools like they want, the same as anyone else.
If that's where people want to send their kids, then so be it. If people want it (demand), it will stay open (supply).
Because, gummit will not give you your own money back free and clear. Vouchers will have strings attached. I admit I have not looked at it closely, but I know that they will never relinquish the control and cash without keeping a good grip on it.
I think depopulation of the public school structure is the only thing that will ultimately work. And I don't think parents should expect that the gummint and edukashun power to make that easy for them to do.
It, is in reality, a war on the home front.

More power to 'em! If we can have Christian or Jewish schools, why do we care what they do, as long as they don't break the law at their schools?
Hey, I don't believe I've ever met an actually wiccan, so I'm not one to judge. I only use them as an example as a group that might get gov't funds that some might find distasteful.
They use wiccans to play, cricket, don't they? Ah, that was a sticky wiccan!
Also - Schools would be subject to simple economics-Supply and demand.
I also agree that parents do need to be made to be more responsible for their own children. The Nanny State officials have made it way cushy to just birth a child and then see them again at their High school graduation party.
