America is alone in the world. It is always lonely at the top, regardless of whether you are referring to a country, an organization, or an individual. That's the price one must pay for being a leader. As long as we're the world's only super power militarily, economically, and morally, we will be alone.
As much as I would love to be an isolationist and tell the rest of the world to f**k off, by divine providence, it is our nation's time to lead the world, just as at one time Greece, Rome, France, and England had their time. One can only pray that we don't make the same mistakes these other nations did.
I certainly admire Mr. Steyn's writing abilities and thought processes as well as his conservative viewpoints but I don't understand how he can use the word "Our" in the title.
He's a Brit citizen by way of Canada.....correct?
Or is he referring to Britain when he uses "Our" and only references "America" in the title?
He's an American, honorary or otherwise.
Mark lives in a small town in New Hampshire, very close to the one I just moved to. I consider him eminently qualified to speak for our country.

I was an isolationist pre-9-11.
There are times I'd love to crawl back in that hole and ignore the world. 9-11 to this day prevents me from doing so. I'd rather not stand alone, but if that is the way it must be, so be it.
I'm grateful that at least some countries have decided to ally with us all the same. We aren't alone, at least not yet.

Now, obviously we have God --its true and really doesn't need to be said, but I just know it pleases European lurkers when we express this point -- but aside from that there are citizens of other countries, even France, who are secretly rooting for us and we must never forget this, just as we didn't forget the Soviet dissidents during the Cold War. They are valuable allies.

There is no problem with his use of the pronoun "our".
