It is a parents worst nightmare. That's why I have a 45 pound Rhodesian Ridgeback, soon to be an 80 pound Rhodesian Ridgeback that sleeps in my daughters room.
This household has 5 dogs, the can't even fart without me knowing about it.
That is why I have and always will have 'big' dogs. And that is why they always sleep by my bed ;) Combination alarm and first line of defense :)
You are exactly right. A few years ago a convicted sex offender broke into the house of a friend (young daughter at home). He was inside the house when her two dogs took him down. He got out of the house but was no longer able to travel fast. The police had no trouble nabbing him.
You give me an even better reason to get a dog.
Ninety lb. Rottie here. She's an absolute goof ball as a rule, but no one comes on the property, or heaven forbid, threatens her "little sister" my two year old daughter, without her getting annoyed.
Rhodesians are awesome dogs. I met one in Boston once, friendly as anything AND HUGE.
I have no experience with Ridgebacks but I once owned a Rottweiler stud with a championship pedigree, descended from dogs shown on the cover of Dog World magazine and The Book of the Rottweiler. I used to jokingly call him "Rotten Willie" but he was gentle as a lamb with children. One look at "Rotten Willie" was enough to make the average adult male become humble in a hurry.

You'll be lucky if that Ridgeback only tops off at 80 pounds. The two my dog plays with both top 100 pounds, without an ounce of fat. My 70-pound Swiss Mountain Dog/Doberman mix holds her own though.
The greatest home-security "system"I ever purchased!
A co-worker who lives in Palo Alto has one. He is an absolutely beautiful dog.
Downside? His breeding didnt' kick in. You may remember about 8 months ago a mountain lion wandered into a residential neighborhood in Palo Alto. It was eventually shot by a deputy. That was a half block from our friends home. Kimba, the lion dog, slept through it.
I'm sure you'll have better luck with yours as a guard dog. A good dog or a shotgun would have been much more effective on this scumbag than a 2x4.
I want a Rhodesian Ridgeback so bad! Beautiful dogs. Anyone in CA want to give me one?
Is that type of dog good with children?
