At Least 3 Dead, 4 Wounded In Nightclub Shooting Witnesses: Alleged Gunman Went Onto Stage, Fired Shots

POSTED: 10:32 pm EST December 8, 2004 UPDATED: 11:36 pm EST December 8, 2004

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- At least three people died and four others were wounded after a shooting at a Columbus nightclub on Wednesday night, NBC 4 reported.

The shooting took place shortly after 10 p.m. at Alrosa Villa, located at 5055 Sinclair Road.

Two members of the heavy metal band Damageplan were reportedly shot and killed, including Dimebag Darrell, formerly with the band Pantera, NBC 4's David Wayne reported. The alleged gunman also died at the scene, Wayne reported.

Shortly after the band began playing its first song, a man reportedly ran onto the stage and began shooting, according to a witness who identified himself as Sean. Some members of the audience reportedly thought the man running onto the stage with a gun was part of the band's act, NBC 4's Erin Tate reported.

Witnesses said that several shots were fired at the band. Witnesses said that a bouncer at the club tackled the alleged gunman before that person was shot and killed. It was unclear as to whom shot the alleged gunman.

Alrosa Villa is a popular north Columbus nightspot for young adults, featuring rock and heavy metal bands, NBC 4 reported.

According to the band's Web site, Damageplan was touring nationally. It performed in Buffalo, N.Y., on Tuesday night and had a concert scheduled in Flint, Mich., on Thursday.

Damageplan featured former Pantera artists Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. The pair were joined by vocalist Patrick Lachman and bassist Bobzilla, according to their Web site.

It's starting to look like unless the crazy left a note, nobody will ever know. If he talked about this beforehand with somebody, that somebody might come forth.

The first day that I carried, I stopped in a bar that I normally do not go to, but wanted to see a particularly beautiful bartender friend. While there a fight started between some college smartasses and some bikers. I had to step over bodies (not dead, just injured) to get out of the bar.

In the last 6 years, I've never had a reason to take the gun out of the holster or to take it out with no reason. There are plenty of others like me that are already carrying and you don't hear about a lot of shootouts. But you can be sure of one thing. . .

The bad guys whose intent is to rape, rob, or kill WILL NOT be deterred by a law or a sign. I count on the fact that the bad guy will always have a weapon. That's why I carry mine.

You said nothing about liability, just about LAWS and a derogatory remark aimed at gun rights advocates. Why do you think that you got attacked? Can you understand that?

Here are your words:

"More proof that laws prohibiting Weapons in private businesses where alcohol is served are correct...sorry "gun slingers".

Opeth! \m/! You want kool technical, you should try out Orphaned Land. \m/!

I'm a big Euro Power/Prog fan, myself, Symphony X, Stratovarius before they hit it big in Finland, older Children of Bodom, Angra, Helloween, Iron Savior, etc. Metal is huge in Europe. It's starting to come back in the US, though!

"Witnesses said that a bouncer at the club tackled the alleged gunman before that person was shot and killed. "

The reporter should be fired for writing that sentence. It is undecipherable gobbledygook.

If people use crank because their favorite guitarist is nicknamed 'Dimebag,' they're morons and followers who deserve whatever they get.

Dimebag Darrell was one of the greatest personalities in metal and a supremely talented guitarist. He was a notorious partier but gave so much to his fans and the community. He was a congenial and ebullient personality who owned whatever stage he was on and was a trailblazer for metal guitar, and has been one of my favorite guitarists (along with Kirk Hammett and Randy Rhoads) from the time I was 10 years old.

I'm still devastated by this news. To those of you making 'Bodybag' Darrell jokes or insinuating he'll go to hell because of his nickname - shame on you. Anybody who saw him in concert, was a fan of the band, or spent any time with him will tell you what a genuinely good person he was, and he certainly didn't deserve this. May he rest in peace.

I still haven't seen them, they've been in the US, what 4 times in the last two years? I might be the only metal head in the US not to have seen CoB. Bah.

Metro Detroit? We're in the same area. Treading a bit outside metal, but are you going to see Queensryche in January?

If you're in Detroit metro we're going to have to hook up one of these times, I go to Ann Arbor at least twice a year. Once in April for the Hash Bash and once again in the fall. If you're not too far from Ann Arbor or Saline maybe we can get a beer in the spring.

See ya!
