My night of terror in a haunted house Nov 20 2004

Nov 2004
By Duncan Gibbons

"A night of terror" is how a man described the time he spent in what is said to be one of Warwickshire's most haunted houses.

Michael Chapman was one of 10 people who spent the night at Shrieves House Barn, in Sheep Street, Stratford.

The 500-year-old building, now home to Falstaffs Experience museum, is said to be a hotbed of paranormal activity.

Mr Chapman, 48, a fine art expert from a village near Stratford, said the ancient building soon revealed its dark secrets.

Volunteers reported feeling dizzy, sick and breathless, and felt icy chills and pains.

He said one woman suffered bruising after being hit on the head by a mystery object and others watched as a picture moved to and fro on the wall.

A photo was taken which is said to show the ghost of an eight-year-old girl who wanders the medieval hallways.

Mr Chapman and his daughter Melissa, 17, were the only two people brave enough to last the whole night - but it is a night they will not forget.

"We were total sceptics. I always thought the dead will never hurt you but now I am not so sure. We felt icy cold, saw flashing lights and I could smell burning - there was a fire here once in which people died.

"I am the most level-headed person there is - but there are things in there that left me thinking perhaps there is more to this world. Even the mediums had to leave.

"I don't believe in heaven and hell but I have to say it's got me guessing. It's a very spooky place." Melissa, a student, said: "I was one of those people who thought this life is all we have - now I am open-minded about everything.

"Something was pulling and shaking me on the night and things have been happening to me since I left. I was at college and someone kicked the chair from under me but there was nobody there. I've also felt a presence at home and in the car."

Other members of the group who stayed in the house at Halloween also said strange events had happened to them afterwards.

Dave Matthews, a white witch and owner of Could It Be Magic, in Shrieves Walk, said he returned to his shop at 3am to find it icy cold. He reports hearing mysterious footsteps and seeing objects being moved around. He then felt a sharp pain in his arm and believes he was followed by an evil spirit.

Another member of the group said she returned home to find the cupboard doors in her kitchen opening and closing and the contents on the floor.

Steve Devey, who owns the museum, said: "We are astounded but not surprised at the level of unexplained paranormal activity"

Unless you have visited haunted places, places confirmed by scientists to have something funny about them (not just places you hear rumors of in your hometown that some ghost is there or whatever), I suggest you tone down the joking.

Until you experience it, it is hard to believe. But, once you do, you believe.

Is it one of those "face jumps out at you and screams" ones? Those suckers are all over the net.

"It is my belief that ghosts as defined as the spirits of dead persons don`t exist. Paranormal phenomena is more likely due to demonic activity."

I'm with you. We have it on good Authority that a spirit world and demons exist.

But the only examples we have of a dead person appearing were those that were on a mission from God.

Samuel appeared to the medium that Saul had consulted. But Samuel rebuked King Saul for consulting a medium and the medium let out a scream leaving many of us to speculate this was the first time her powers had ever really worked. Before and after this I bet she was a fraud.

Moses and Elijah (?)appeared to Jesus on the Mountain. But evil dead people would be in Hell awaiting judgement. They wouldn't be haunting people.

As mentioned in various posts between 77 and 138 every Christian has the authority to cast out demons. The point that was not mentioned is that we have to KNOW that we have that authority and we have to exercise it

So far as I understand, that authority is widely presumed, but that presumption is an inference on what Scripture says. I dare say much of what goes on as "exorcism" is nothing more than drama queens using the theologically naive as players in their theater. I also suspect when the rubber meets the road, these self-styled exorcists are about as successful as the Christians, both clergy and rank-and-file, that presume to hand out marital advice.

Absent with the body, present with the Lord (not festering in the grave as your heretical rotting in teh grave until the Second Coming doctrine would have us believe).

"And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover" (Mk. 16:17-18). This was not an authority that the Lord gave only to "professional" clergy, but to all who trust in Him.

He also said where two or three are gathered together in His name, and in agreement, anything asked would be given them...apparently the mandate is not as comprehensive as many would like to believe.

That's not an uncommon story in the reviews posted at Amazon. A friend of mine had a board when I was a kid. I probably would have played had he asked me. Glad I didn't.

My wife played with her sister as a kid and got spooked when the planchet began to move by itself.

Well, in the case of your example, the Bible is elsewhere specific that we must pray in accordance with God's will (James, for example, though I don't remember chapter and verse off the top of my head). Praying in twos doesn't give us a blank check to make ourselves millionaires--however, I have seen some amazing things come out of corporate prayer.

Now, while you are partially correct, let's get to the core of your contention: Exactly where are you seeing Biblical caveats to a believer's authority in Jesus Christ over demons so as to cast them out?

For this reason the Catholic Church reserves exorcism to the clergy.

And have shrunk the word 'saint' to be applied to only a VERY small subset of believers, unlike the biblical description.

agreed. With one caveat. As long as they've been saved and baptised. (This caveat applies both to Catholics and protestants. Just because someone goes to church doesn't make them a Christian)

It is made clear though in 2 Cor.5:6-8 that being absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

Is it????

2 Corinthians 5

 1.  Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
 2.  Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling,
 3.  because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked.
 4.  For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
 5.  Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
 6.  Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord.
 7.  We live by faith, not by sight.
 8.  We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
 9.  So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.

Verse says definitely that as long as we are breathing, we ain't gonna be with the Lord.  But does verse 8 say that after death we WILL be?

I see Paul's PREFERENCE to be done with the problems of this world -  and to be with the Lord -  but one has to place a time between the two desires, otherwise it conflicts with OTHER Scriptures which say the opposite.

For years, we've been telling the same tale to little kids, that (after death) Fluffy or Nemo or Gramma is now with the Lord, that it has taken on a life of it's own....

When I was in the service, I could quite accurately say, "I desire to be out of this CS outfit and be lounging on the Riveria, enjoying my retirement."   (There was going to be a LONG time span before this ever came about!)
