College Professor: "Republican party are essentially the Christian version of the Taliban"

Meetings are being held to discuss politics in the classroom after a professor apologized for an e-mail in which he vented his frustrations over the result of the presidential election.

The controversial e-mail was written by Paul Lauritzen, director of the Applied Ethics Program and professor of Religious Studies, to 32 faculty and administrators.

The e-mail, which was sent on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 10:31 a.m., somehow made it into the hands of students.

In it, Lauritzen wrote that he was “depressed beyond belief” at the result of the election. He added that he was angry, using an expletive.

He then called on colleagues to become more active in political discussion with their students.

“We need to tell our students that Bush is a liar and that many in the Republican party are essentially the Christian version of the Taliban,” he wrote.

“Bush won Ohio and much of the rest of the country because of Guns, Gays, and God,” Lauritzen wrote.

He added, “I say No Guns, No Gay Bashing, Not Your God.”

He added that faculty must organize against the war in Iraq.

“We have to abandon this studied neutrality,” Lauritzen wrote. “We have to lead by example. I ask you to join me in transforming the culture at JCU.”

At the end of the e-mail, Lauritzen urged the recipients to forward the message to others who might be interested.

The Carroll News obtained the e-mail from various students who each expressed their concern over its contents.

Senior Brian Ellis, who was one of the students who got a hold of the e-mail, met with Lauritzen.

“We’re not paying for a one-sided education,” Ellis said.

Nine days after the original e-mail, Lauritzen sent out an apology to the faculty, staff and administrator e-mail list. The same apology will be sent to all students.

“Because the language of the e-mail was intemperate, it has given great offense to many in our community, especially many Republicans,” Lauritzen wrote.

Lauritzen said that it was not his intention to insult anyone.

He also apologized to the recipients of the e-mail, saying that they could mistakenly be thought to endorse the e-mail.

“No one should draw that conclusion,” Lauritzen said.

He added, “The anger expressed in my e-mail was blameworthy, and I

apologize for it.”

Hmmm -- OK… and he states:

“We need to tell our students that Bush is a liar and that many in the Republican party are essentially the Christian version of the Taliban,”
“Bush won Ohio and much of the rest of the country because of Guns, Gays, and God,”
“I say No Guns, No Gay Bashing, Not Your God.”
“We have to lead by example. I ask you to join me in transforming the culture at JCU.”

This somewhat reminds me of a West Wing episode that aired on Bravo last night. A federal prisoner who was a convicted drug trafficker and double murderer, and who had, I believe, four murder convictions in Mexico, was set to be executed. The case went before the Supreme Court and for some reason the Bartlet gang had been assured that the case was going to sent back to the 6th Circuit; it wasn’t and the Supreme Court denied cert and ordered the execution to proceed.

Bartlet and his boys were quite upset at the idea of executing this murderer and drug trafficker, but they weren’t sure whether a commutation was politically beneficial. Bartlet is seen in the Oval Office with Rosary in hand; calls the Pope; and calls for his old parish priest (Karl Malden) to come to the White House. Bartlet decides not to intercede and Malden asks him if he (Bartlet) wants Malden to hear his confession. Bartlet says yes and Malden pulls out a small stole from his jacket (required for sacraments) and Bartlet drops to one knee next to Malden, crosses himself, and says “Father, forgive me, for I have sinned,” all with the Rosary firmly in hand.

All of this over a multiple murderer and drug trafficker, and yet Bartlet is adamantly pro-abort. Sound like real life for many “Catholic” heretics and scandal mongers?

I wonder if God appreciates this putz talking about the followers of His Son in this way? This professor may have more to worry about than just upsetting the right wing.

Dear Prof. I don't bash Gays, I don't force people to go to my church. But I think I'm keeping the Winchester. Just in case of YOU.

I thought you were suppose to get and education in college but it appears that what they do is indoctrination. At the cost of a college education, and a number of parents pay for their children's college education, the school and the parents should be outraged at an obvious display of intolerance vis-a-vis the 1st amendment. This is obviously a case of putting the inmates in charge of the asylum.

I'll point out that he was invited by President Bush and Leon Kass to write an article for the President's commission on stem cell research.

And this is the way he treats the President.

Ethics? This scumbag can't even be polite.

I think college professors are "essentially" the Stalinist version of the common idiot.

Now you just insulted all us common idiots.

He appologized for the tone of the email, not the message. This idiot should kiss the feet of every passing US soldier for not knowing what the word 'Taliban' really means. And if a professor wants to get political he should do it on HIS time, not on the students' dime. Typical liberal.

If this title is true (but it's not) the professor's life is in great danger. (Islam kills people for saying these sort of things, the fact that Christians don't proves his premise to be false)

All these morons do is project their own ideology. This country was founded on relgious freedom, it's clowns like this guy who if they had the power and could get away with it would round up all Christians and either lock them up or put them to death.

They are sorry they got caught, not sorry that they slander all Christians by comparing them to the Taliban. He should be fired.

“I say No Guns, No Gay Bashing, Not Your God.”

Considering this guy is for the enemy and probably a communist as well, how about: "No to US Citizenship"?
