UC scholar to help Democrats refine message - Party is urged to control policy debate

Washington -- House Democrats, seeking to take the offensive against Republicans in an effort to win back a majority, will talk Tuesday with a Berkeley scholar who says Republicans have succeeded by framing the nation's political debate on their terms.

The scholar, UC Berkeley professor of linguistics and cognitive sciences George Lakoff, is a hot item in liberal circles these days as he argues Democrats must develop a message that resonates more deeply with voters. His latest book, "Don't Think of an Elephant: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate,'' is on best-seller lists in Washington and the Bay Area. Before the Nov. 2 election, then-Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota and Rep. George Miller, D-Martinez, who heads the House Democratic Policy Committee, distributed hundreds of copies of Lakoff's book to their colleagues and staffs.

"It's all about words and craftsmanship,'' said Rep. Sam Farr, D-Carmel, of Lakoff's advice. "He shows us that we ought to take the Republicans' words and show why they don't work, why they just aren't so.''

Farr points as examples to President Bush's Leave No Child Behind Act, the education law that Democrats say has shortchanged many children, and Bush's calls for "tax reform,'' which the Democrats say is another plan to help the wealthy at the expense of the middle class.

Snip

He has suggested that same-sex marriage should be referred to as "the right to marry.'' Trial lawyers like vice presidential nominee John Edwards should instead be called "public protection attorneys,'' and the term environmental protection, which brings to mind big government and reams of regulations, should instead be termed "poison-free communities.''

Oh, yeah, that's the path back to permanent majority. LOL.

This clown honestly thinks that another dose of too-clever-by-half newspeak is going to bamboozle the public and turn things around?

I should think most of us are already wise to this well-worn modus operandi.

poison-free communities

Okay, we'll start with cleaning supplies and medication that isn't child-safe. Then we'll remove all arsenic-treated wood and create a police patrol to go door-to-door looking for past-dated milk.

They still don't get it. Going to Cal-Berkely is like the chicken going to the fox and asking how to protect the chickens from the foxes. They're the hot bed of liberalism there at Berkely.

George Lakoff, which rhymes with jack-off as Rush pointed out today sounds like the perfect guy to give the rats a message that resonates with voters. Yet another Christmas gift for Republicans.

"Democrats must develop a message that resonates more deeply with voters"

How about simply standing for something and then communicating it to voters. Dems don't get it - You can't "Develop a message" if you don't believe it or if your actions belie it.

Democrats say is another plan to help the wealthy at the expense of the middle class.

Has Lakoff heard the term, "Shopworn Horseplop"? Nobody falls for the old "Republicans are for the rich" BS anymore. That's because people can just look at the Democrats and see that they are the party of Manhattan socialites, trial lawyers, and Hollywood stars. Oh yeah, and windsurfing gigolos with five mansions who run for president because it's the next feather in their cap.

ROFLMAO.

Yeah, PC vocabulary reframing on campus and in the media has brought them thousands of new supporters. That'll work wonders. /sarcasm

Lakoff says Republicans -- through their elaborate think tanks that train them to influence the media -- have learned how to speak to voters in simple terms.

Since when has the media been on our side? The Republicans have learned to manipulate the media? We wish. The truth shines through nonetheless, but the Democrats are so blind that they can't see beyond their own insular fences.

Yep, all they need is new buzzwords to trick us rubes into voting for them. There may never be another Democratic president in our lifetimes if this is the level of their analysis.

We didn't learn to use the old media. We developed our own media and did an end-around. They still haven't realized this.

They might as well go whole hog... Maybe in 2008 we'll see ads that say "Republicans doubleplusungood!"

The idea around which liberalism coheres is that NOTHING actually matters but PR. Which is simply another way of saying that the Democratic message is always crafted to flatter journalism.

And this "It's the massage of the message" [expletive deleted] is nothing if not flattering to journalists, saying that wordsmithing is all that really matters.

It has nothing to do with the fact that what you are selling is horse hockey; it's all about style.

Democrats must develop a message that resonates more deeply with voters

But the old one was working so well...

Democrat's Standard Message

The text translates: "Health, child protection, fighting poverty, aiding travelers, community, helping mothers: These are the tasks of the National Socialist People's Charity. Become a member!"

That was part of the message this Berkeley A$$hole was sending to the Dems - I responded below it. Believe me I love the way they think they can craft their message to attract voters. Sort of like a solution looking for a problem. Works so well for them too! \sarcasm

How can we fool 'em better next time? There's the idea - let's watch HOW we say it not WHAT we say. The poor dolts have no idea why they lost the last election. I mean they still think they didn't get their message out! By all means, let's encourage them to think prettier packaging will make a repulsive set of ideas more palatable to the voters.
