PARIS - A French soldier who had locked himself in an explosives depot and threatened to blow it up turned himself in Monday, the Interior Ministry said, ending a three-day standoff that prompted the evacuation of hundreds of villagers in northeastern France.
Angered about being forced to retire, 46-year-old Regis Le Tohic on Friday seized control of the depot where he worked near the town of Fere-Champenoise, about 60 miles east of Paris.
The warehouse contained 60 tons of explosives, mostly anti-tank mines.
Dozens of police officers blocked off the warehouse, while rescue workers fanned out in nearby villages to escort some 400 residents beyond the safety perimeter, officials said. Flights were redirected around the area.
Officials over the weekend had said they found a letter addressed to the Defense Ministry in front of the depot in which Le Tohic, a warrant officer and explosives expert, had threatened to blow up the site.
Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin expressed his "satisfaction on the conditions in which the negotiation conducted" was carried out, said a statement that gave no further details.
Le Tohic, who is divorced, had been turned down for a promotion he had requested, officials said. He was demanding the army reconsider his case.
Under French law, warrant officers like Le Tohic are required to retire at age 47 which he will turn on Dec. 17, Chanliau said.
Here's one Frenchman who wants to keep fighting, or at least working!
Give me mandatory retirement at 47, that's all I can say, because I'll be putting up my heels very shortly if that is the case.
He surrendered in the end.
Hell, the French troops surrender every time there's fireworks at Euro Disney.
Is it true the French always have a surrender drawn up, just in case?
Heh heh heh... couldn't resist.
FLASH!!! NEWS RELEASE FROM REUTERS!!!
The French soldier who held himself hostage has been returned to active duty in the French Military. He has been made Commandante of their White Flag manufacturing facility in Vichy, and has been commissioned for special duty as a Hostage Crisis Negotiator.
His first practical assignment will be to turn himself over to Muslim extremists and negotiate for his own release.
Very crafty of him . . . Surrendering proves he's still qualified to be a French soldier!
No wonder they laid him off: just look out how long it took him to surrender! He's not obviously not cut out for the kind of work the French military takes very seriously.
When there's a will there's a way. This guy was so desperate to surrender, that he had to create the circumstances. He wasn't willing to retire, until he could surrender. Now he can retire with dignity and full military benefits.

LOL!
LOLOL....french and surrender in the same sentence. What a shock.
So there's at least one good guy that writes the headlines at the AP. Could be a FReeper, or a German.
He had 'em on the ropes. If he had held out another day France would have surrendered to him.
