Linux software maker Xandros has joined the growing number of open source software offerings on PC desktops at Wal-Mart's online store. Like other PCs available from Wal-Mart, the Xandros-powered systems don't come with a monitor, and range in price from US $200 to $600.
The Xandros-powered PCs have 1.5 to 3 GHz AMD processors along with 128 to 256 MB of memory, CD-ROM or CD-RW-DVD-combo drives, 40 to 80 GB hard drives, and a comprehensive set of software based on Xandros Desktop Standard Edition v2.0.
In 2002, Wal-Mart introduced PCs with Linux preloaded from "white box" manufacturer Microtel. Walmart.com also sells the systems with desktop Linux software from Novell (SuSE), Lycoris, Lindows, and Linare. Linux market leader Red Hat rolled out Linux PCs early last year in Wal-Mart-backed Sam's Club member warehouses starting at US $300.
Last summer Xandros released a free download of its desktop Linux OS. The Xandros Open Circulation edition is freely available for download from the company's website.
Xandros is a nice Debian distro, would still like to see more Linux distro's make their way into stores.
Gotta have an 'X' in the name, I tell ya! SUCCESS GUARANTEED.
I've been able to find Gentoo, Redhat, Mandrake, Slackware, and Turbo Linux, not to mention assorted FreeBSD and OpenBSD distros at Fry's Electronics.
man, I'm just looking for a reason to go Linux-- but I hear the learning curve is steep and I'm too short-winded as is.
Add palindrome, get world by the tail: Xanax.
Poing.
We don't exactly have a Fry's here in Montana, and I've never heard of it before. The most I've seen in stores here is Red Hat or FC
Linux isnt that hard to learn, although if you really want to learn linux, Slackware is a good to actually learn linux instead of use it.
You mean like in Pony eXpress?
If you want most of the advantages of Linux, a shallower learning curve and the ability to still use Office, the Macintosh is a better deal than Linux. Unless you either need to save every penny you can, or if you want to plunge into the guts of an operating system, you're better off with Apple.
A few months back, I needed a cheap Linux computer and wanted to give Wal*Mart a chance at my business, since I was pleased that they, a mass-market retailer, had introduced Linux computers. Turns out they did and they didn't; you can't buy the computers at stores. This was a great disappointment to me because I needed a computer immediately. I wound up going with Frys' Linux computer, which was actually pretty darn good for $178.

No, like in Jesus X. Christ.
St. Francis Xavier might disagree! ;-)
He might, being unpalidromatic. Any chance of rebranding as Xavax?
;-)
vi works for me.
Xavax?
Isn't that the penile enhancement drug they keep spamming me with? *LOL*
Not sure St. FX would be impressed. Me being a good Catholic girl, and all! *L*
If most of what you do is MS Office related activities, web browsing and email, then Linux would be pretty easy for you. If you play computer games, then stick with Windows.
Heaven forbid I should meet a bad one!
;-)
To each their own. Macs are just too expensive for my tastes. For the cost of one Mac, I can easily buy three or four comparable speed x86 systems.
Me, I use Linux as both workstations and servers. If I want a BSD-based server, I'd sooner go with OpenBSD than the FreeBSD-based MacOS.
