MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The discovery of a tomb filled with decapitated bodies suggests Mexico's 2,000 year-old "Pyramid of the Moon" may have been the site of horrifically gory sacrifices, archeologists said on Thursday.
The tomb at Teotihuacan, the first major city built in the Americas, whose origins are one of history's great mysteries, also held the bound carcasses of eagles, dogs and other animals.
"It is hard to believe that the ritual consisted of clean, symbolic performances -- it is most likely that the ceremony created a horrible scene of bloodshed with sacrificed people and animals," said Saburo Sugiyama, one of the scientists leading the ongoing dig.
"Whether the victims and animals were killed at the site or a nearby place, this foundation ritual must have been one of the most terrifying acts recorded archeologically in Mesoamerica."
Of the 12 human bodies found, 10 were decapitated and then tossed, rather than arranged, on one side of the burial site. The two other bodies were richly ornamented with beads and a necklace made of imitation human jaws.

Murderous muslim garbagem in Mexico? Their were not Muslims then, since Mohamed had not yet been born. However their were Arabs. Maybe a few drifted across the Atlantic and spread their so called "culture" there? Islam is Arab culture's method of metastasizing.

Imagine the kind of people who would come from a culture like this. They're not in Mexico any more. They're here.

the french did not stop beheading people until the 1970s. But the French did not use a dull knife to saw the head off, they used what was considered at the time to be fairly humane, the Guillotine. Even most Arab executions are done with a heavy sword, severing the head with a single stroke. Can't be any worse, and probably isn't as bad as being hung or electrocuted.

Maybe Ralphie is down there!
Remember in the Sopranos when Tony killed Ralphie and then enlisted Christopher's aid in dismembering and burying the body?

"Pyramids...Moon god (goddess) worshipers that cut off heads....sounds familiar"
Moody Science Videos did an excellent show on this - "Empty Cities", from the mid 70s I think. The stories and history of civilization after civilization that would go from great to bad to worse because of human sacrifice that they eventually turned to.

The discovery of a tomb filled with decapitated bodies suggests Mexico's 2,000 year-old
"Pyramid of the Moon" may have been the site of horrifically gory sacrifices,
archeologists said on Thursday.
Reminds me of the PBS series "Conquistadors" with Michael Wood.
(IIRC) Wood related about how Montezuma took Cortez and his band up to one of the
pyramids and started to happily describe what took place there.
Cortez and his band were revolted and simply freaked out.
I guess I'm as culturally-insensitive as Cortez, given the feelings I experienced
in the wake of 9-11.

Climbed them in 1990 and again in 1992. Very cool place. I remember pottery shards littering the ground and a really bad resturaunt at the visitor's center. Montezuma's revenge...

Imagine the kind of people who would come from a culture like this. They're not in Mexico any more. They're here. This was all about the time of Jesus. Don't ask about what sorts of things were going on with the European Ancestors of most "white" Americans at that time. Or what their stay at home cousins did circa 1939-1945. Or what those other eastern European relatives of the Scandanatians (The Rus) were doing from about 1920 onwards. Starving Ukranians was the least of it, although probalby accounted for the biggest "bill".

Oh, but wait. I thought all the native people were flower-stringing nature lovers who held hands by crystal clear streams and communed with the Great Spirit. Until the murdering Europeans polluted their cultures and slaughtered their citizens ...
This must be more work of those conquistadores.

Yes you are right. I was basing my description on the picture in the yahoo article (which is of the pyramid of the Sun) rather than what was stated.

That's how they used to handle border crossings. I bet the Aztecs wish they had better border security and a more reasonable immigration policy.

That sucks that they built a walmart so close...
The site should be preserved for future generations to enjoy..

That's the Temple of the Sun. It is in fact the largest monument in Teotihuacan.
This is the Temple of the Moon. It's partially ruined at the top (which makes the climb entertaining to say the least.)

Yes my mistake. Should have read the article rather than just looking at the pretty pictures. :-)
Chichen Itza is large, but I don't think quite as massive as the Pyramid of the Sun. It might be higher though, I forget. Mexican archaeology is only an interest and not my area of expertise--which is in SW US puebloan groups.
