NBC's Brian Williams a Dittohead?
NewsMax ^ | Dec. 2, 2004 | Carl Limbacher

NBC's "Nightly News" may be changing in more ways than one when Brian Williams takes over Tom Brokaw's old anchor chair tonight.

While Brokaw was an inveterate liberal who regarded the new media with deep suspicion, Williams is a regular talk radio listener who considers Rush Limbaugh a media icon.

"Rush Limbaugh has a place in American history he has not yet received his due for," Williams told ABC Radio network host Sean Hannity on Wednesday.

"There were millions of Americans who were out in the wilderness and had no one who shared their voice," the NBC'er said. "And he came along and gave birth to a whole bunch of things."

Williams called Limbaugh "a leader in the business" and said he regards it as "my job to listen to Rush."

His comments may not go down too well with NBC morning diva Katie Couric, who's reportedly no fan of Limbaugh.

Describing a somewhat hostile encounter between himself and Couric some years back, Limbaugh told his audience on Tuesday, "There's still some tension there."

One way to lock me in as a viewer is if Williams calls Jon Corzine a "left-winged idiot with a bad hairdo", or refers to Hillary as Hillary SpongeB**** Squarepants. I know that won't happen, wishful thinking on my part, but I'll give him a week or so.

4 years ago when Hillary won and came out in front of the cameras while Lazio was giving his concession speech, I was tuned into msnbc watching Brian Williams.

Msnbc went to a split screen (unlike cnn which dumped Lazio) and while Hillary was shown waving at the crowd, Williams commented something to the effect that in politics it's an unspoken rule to let the loser give his speech before the winner makes an appearance in front of the camera. He then went on to say that the clintons have never been known to be considerate of others. I did not expect such a candid observation from a news guy, Hillary wasn't just inconsiderate, it was plain rude.

The official bio says Williams worked in Carter's White House as an intern. So he's as much a Democrat as Tim Russert, Chris Mathews, "Steffi" Stephanooulos, Bill Moyers and the rest.

Mr. Williams has probably just slit his professional throat. Let's not be naive here.

Yep -- on one of his show anniversaries. That was a particularly good one -- even Paul Harvey called in with his standard "Hello Americans, this is Paul Harvey."

The doode looks like he wears Man Tan, but that's all right. I agree with you, Quick1. I don't care if the news reader is a closet Marxist, I want the story with no obvious bias or spin. Believe me, I can smell the stink from across the globe. I don't want the story to reinforce my beliefs, or offend them. Yes, I know that sometimes this is impossible to avoid. I'll know when it is. I simply want the news. On the cable channels, or perhaps on the radio, there is all the red meat a bed wetter or a real man could want. I'll tune in to further refine the day's stories.

Having a news anchor educated and articulate enough to say "... for which he has not yet received his due" instead of "... he has not yet received his due for" would be a refreshing change. Alas, I ask too much.

I didn't like his newscast tonight. He's way too stiff, robotic. It's like he's an animatronic mannequin reading the news.

Compare that to any of the guys on Fox, whose personalities all come shining through, even if to a goofy extent in Shep Smith.

He launches praise and accolades for all the hard work Brokaw did in the 20+ years at the national anchor desk he now sits behind, hard work that puts him at the top at the beginning of his tenure and he said he will work hard and make sure the news department that worked under Tom works as hard as they have for the past 20+ years to keep NBC News on top. He even said that he felt humbled to sit in for Tom during Tom's many absences for vacations or on-assignment reports. Of course, he said Tom isn't going anywhere, and we as viewers shouldn't either(I have to admit, I laughed at that of course).

Well, that's being a company man. He said more than just that he listens to Rush and thinks it's his job to do so. He talked about how Rush doesn't get his due for what he has done.

He also talked about how he and "my friend Brit Hume" covered the Whtie House together and Brit showed him the way media bias works. "What's wrong with this?" he asked Brian Lamb. "Conservative firebrand Newt Gingrich today labelled Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy..." He noted what he said Brit had told him: "If you're going to call Gingrich something, why not call Kennedy something?" He gets that that's bias, something Rather, Jennings, and Brokaw never got.

Maybe not a conservative, but a guy who seems like he might be more willing to give conservative viewpoints and individuals a fair shake than the rest of the people in network news.

Caught him on the Daily Show the other night, and I thought he was hilarious and smart.

That he is; you should hear him tell the story of how Mickey Mouse humiliated him in front of his own children at Disney World. :-)

You can usually tell who doesn't listen to him. They're the ones who get Rush's comments completely out of context or flat out wrong.

You're exactly right. I've always said that those who think Rush is an egomaniac are the ones who have never listened to him once. Rush rules.
