GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (AP) - An elementary school bus driver was fired after sharing a statistic she had read about embryonic stem cell research with students, then encouraging them to tell their parents about it.

Anyone else using my kid to get information to me is inappropriate, in my opinion. Whatever the information or how innocuous it seems.
I believe GuruNet's second definition of inappropriate applies here: Not in keeping with conventional mores; indecorous: improper behavior.
How about this? Little 8-year-old Sally comes home one day and tells you that the bus driver told everyone that she is a Wiccan which is like being a good witch. Being a good witch never hurt anybody, did it mommy?
Would you like that?
Now, all that said, I still think termination is a little steep for the first offense, in this case. But that's only because I agree with your message. I'd want the "good witch" fired.
"Shirley you know the validity of the statemnt is independent of who "spouted" it "off". (And YES, I just called you "Shirley". ha ha ha)."
Regardless, she did not deserve to be terminated for having an opinion like this one.
The founders of the United States of America were mainly comprised of theists. The library of Congress is filled with documents generated as a result of the efforts of our founding fathers and these documents support a specific worldview. Namely, that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is in charge of the universe, and in particular, of America's formation and destiny. Wicca, Islam, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Scientology, various pagan religious manifestations and many more, are all practiced unimpeded in this nation, but none had any impact on, or factored into the thinking of our founding fathers or their writings.
For this bus driver to promote healthy ideas of morality that are in opposition to the current trend toward political correctness may alarm some of the less mature among us, but to those who remember a saner time, her defiance of the devil's minion is rather reassuring.
"I'm a school bus driver. She was out of line."
I try to live my life as out of line as possible.
Anything less is chickens#it.
Hi Rus and Jul! I just read your e-mail and decided to check out the thread. Well, it's a bad situation that's for sure. While I really don't see a huge problem with the discussion in general terms, the part about "go home and talk to your parents about it" is kind of asking for trouble. I'll bet half of it was because you don't want to join the union like a good little worker and the other half is because by saying "go talk to your parents" you were at least getting into a situation you could have avoided. However there is certainly no reason to lose your job over this crap. They make warnings for a reason.
Let me just say at the least, I hope you get your job back, and maybe make a few bucks for improper firing along the way. Secondly, now I'm looking at moving to New Hampshire sooner rather than later. No state income tax, no sales tax, business-friendly atmosphere, most gun-friendly state in the union, a culture of self reliance (no seat belt, motorcycle helmet, or car insurance laws) just to name a few things. At this point there is really no reason other than my band to stay in New York. And from what I can tell, unlike here in NY, the economy is doing well and growing. Apparently there are a lot of jobs for architects and contracters due to the growth there.
:)
Take care and best regards, keep me posted!
You choose to look at this from a "political" perspective. Until things are fair and balanced, you plan to stay out of it. Fine.
As one who cares about children, I'll fight this everywhere I see it, every time I see it. My priority is children, not fairness.
Gosh, I don't know... Maybe because we hear about conservatives getting fired over these issues fairly regularly here on FR?
Even you stated (post 210), "It' always someone on the right who gets fired for espousing a conservative position.
You mean it's a conspiracy!!?? Gosh.....
"A district official said he couldn't comment on Thompson's employment history with the district but said district policy doesn't allow discussion of political issues with students while employees are on duty."
So, teachers (employees) don't discuss political issues with their students in this school district? History and/or government classes must be extremely boring and ultimately useless if that's the case. I wonder what they talk about in these classes?
Look, either you believe that parents should be in charge of the moral education of their children or that the state should be in charge. Apparently, you believe the state should be in charge, as long as they are teaching ideas and facts that you like. Leaving issues of freedom aside, even here on FR, devout, Christian people cannot agree on a worldview!
I'd rather parents be in charge of their children. I happily support parents sending their children to religious schools or homeschooling. Sometimes people having this freedom results in their teaching their children things I disagree with. I am secure enough in my beliefs to not feel threatened by that. Ultimately, greater freedom is better for parents, children and families.
And though I may be "less mature" than the Old Cracker I am old enough to remember (just barely) a saner time.
However, my point was that using elementary school-aged children to get your message out about Mel Gibson's latest pronouncement on embryonic stem cell research or the fact that you pattern your life after Glenda from the Wizard of Oz is just flat out wrong in my book.
You want to get a message to me, fine, but don't use my kid to do it. There are other ways and venues in which to do this. Make use of them.
I do not know Mrs. Mayor but she sounds like a fine person and I would be happy knowing my child was in her care while riding on her bus.
But, if I think my child needs to know about Mel Gibson's opinions on embryonic stem cell research at the tender age of 8, then I'll have that discussion. I'm the parent here, not Mrs. Mayor, so that's my responsibility. Mrs. Mayor's responsibility, as far as my child is concerned, is to provide s safe trip to and from school.
As long as Mrs. Mayor voices ideas consistent with the Word of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, she should not be harassed in any way whatsoever. Witchcraft is counter to the Word of God and in my neighborhood, anyone promoting such demonic ideas to children would be removed from such a position of responsibility and encouraged to find another community to call home.
SON --- SUE THE BASTARD'S FOR EVERYTHING YOU CAN
DAD
I too would rather that parents be in charge of their children, but for those who are irresponsible enough to deny the supremacy of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, then perhaps their child rearing privileges should be revoked.
Qualifying free speech leads to loss of free speech.
Not all speech is free. Certain types of speech come with a price.
And if you had a Brain you'd be Dangerous
I am =)
Not much for freedom, are you?
And sometimes the price of free speech is being fired from your job for attempting to indoctrinate other people's children.
