Appeals court rejects bid by Clinton friend to block huge Vineyard home

The state Appeals Court on Monday rejected a bid by a friend of former President Clinton to block a huge vacation home from being built near his estate on Martha's Vineyard.

Developer Richard Friedman was one of more than a dozen people that own homes near Oyster Pond, in Edgartown, who sued to stop the construction of a 15,600-square-foot house in their neighborhood.

Friedman has loaned his island home to President Clinton and his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., who spent several summer vacations there during their White House years.

His would-be neighbor, Robert Levine, co-founded Cabletron Systems Inc. with New Hampshire's Republican Gov. Craig Benson. In addition to the huge home, Levine plans to build a boat house, pool, pool house and tennis court on his 34-acre parcel.

Friedman and his neighbors sued the Edgartown Conservation Commission after the board approved Levine's plan. They said the developers violated bylaws by failing to show that the project would not harm wildlife or cause ``the loss or disruption or natural and historic views and vistas.'' They also alleged that the property is a ``priority habitat'' for rare species and vegetation, including the eastern box turtle and the Nantucket shadbush.

A Superior Court judge ruled that the plaintiffs had not shown that the commission's approval of the project had resulted in any injury to them.

The Appeals Court agreed Monday, ruling that the plaintiffs had not shown that they ``will suffer injuries separate from the town as a whole.''

Hey Richard F. - I hope your new neighbor puts in a 34 acre parking lot, ya schmuck.

Somebody needs to reign in this capitalist pig! This is beyond outrageous. Do they not know the number of earthworms that are now going to be homeless? Oh, the utter devastation!

That's Liberals for ya. Once they get their slice of prime real estate, they want to sue anyone else trying to enjoy similar (or better) arrangements than they have. Only the Liberals use ridiculous enviro-whacko laws to bolster their case. This has been true throughout California and is the primary reason why land is so ridiculously expensive out here.

I have had working class relatives on the Vineyard for 80 years.

The one big advantage to these monster homes built by billionaires is the property taxes they pay. They support a fine school system yet don't use the schools.

And while there, Clinton shopped at the Black Dog for gifts for his young mistress, Monica. :)

In the Paris valley of Virginia, there are some old horsie estates. Hwy 15 goes from Winchester, to meet I-66 just west of Marshall. From the Clarke County line, until you get to 66 (about 20 miles +/-), they changed the speed limit to 45, and banned thru trucks. Now the trucks have to go down I-81 to connect with 66, and it adds about 50-60 miles to the trip. (I would show the map here, but can't get the image to display: http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?ed=M7tNO.p_0TqT&csz=paris%2C+va&country=us&new=1&name=&qty=)

It has probably cost a few hundred million by now, in lost productivity, and extra fuel costs, so these folk can have a little enclave of their own. It has also added a substantial amount to the court system, for it is heavily enforced (which means- SPEED TRAP)

The few are more politically wired, than the many...

In addition, about 10-12 yrs ago, Disney wanted to build a historic al theme part, just east of this area. the nimby's went to work, and beat them back. No clue what the blow was to the economy, but methinks that Disney would have gotten much income from this thing, and would have hired a lot of folk...

I bought land next to a state WMA forest, and hopefully it won't get developed before I die. But, down the road to my place, about a mile, they have begun buiding high saturation developments... oh, well! I still have places in NM and AZ, where the antelope roam, and lots of jackrabbits stare at you!!

Only natives on the conservation commish? One of the nice things about aliens owning property is they can't vote and serve on boards and commissions.

We'll get the legal defense fund setup right here on FR. I know a few lawyers. In fact, I'll ping one that's just sitting around and screwing poor people out of their money. That's all these guys and gals do. Right, lawgivr.

Justice for the Whooping Crane! Down with greedy, rich, capitlist pigs! :)

I will gladly defend you to your last dollar.

Don't tell everyone I am a lawyer. I don't want the word to get out. My mother thinks I am a piano player in a brothel and I would hate to disappoint her.
