Overt Socialism
29 November 2004 | cougar_mccxxi

During a recent trip to one of the downtown businesses I had an experience that put a lot of things into perspective for me. Things like the former presidential race, hot political topics, social issues... they all have came into perspective because of what I saw in this small town book store.

As I browsed the titles in the historical and non-fiction sections I noticed some books were turned cover facing out. Who knows why but 98% of the books displayed in this manner were either anti-Bush, anti-conservative or anti-capitalist in nature.

I thought this must have been a concidence until I browsed the periodical section. In this section I found at least three magazines displayed front row at eye level that were published to further the socialist cause. One title for example was the International Socialist Review.

To say the least I was stunned by what I had seen at this point of my visit to the bookstore. I felt as if I was in Communist China or Cuba. There were so many titles tearing down this country it was quite honestly alarming to me. Alarming in the sense that our way of life is in jeopardy from not only enemies outside our borders but enemies within as well. Not Al Queda mind you, but Americans that hate what some of us still hold dear; our freedoms and liberties.

I wish I was over reacting but I am convinced there is an old battle still raging in this country. It is the battle between atheistic socialism and God given liberty. Socialists were covert in this country during the cold war but are seemingly becoming more and more overt based on my one little trip to the book store last weekend.

Welcome to Free Republic. Don't expect the socialists to go quietly. In situations like that bookstore, complain to the management (it might be an employee's doing), and if the intention is overt, then take your business elsewhere.

It's the Battle of the Bulge, the Tet Offensive for the left. They're losing power, their principles being soundly rejected by a majority of the populace, that majority growing every year. What are you gonna do--become more covert? Nope, they're in full attack mode. Their true colors (red) have been exposed, so why hide it? Time for one last valiant effort to repel "the enemy at the gate", tactics be damned.

BTW, I was in Portland, OR a few months ago and saw the exact same thing in a bookstore there. My dad and I were amazed at the sheer number of anti-Bush/Bush Admin/American books in print. It's like the lefties took every whacked conspiracy theory of theirs, sub-divided it into thirty sub-conspiracies and wrote a 1000-page book about it. It was breath-taking.

You're right about the battle in this country, but I think it goes deeper than that, it's between good and evil; satan and God. And it is a threat to our way of life and what we hold dear. That's why this election was so important. Good won this time, but that just makes satan mad and more determined and we have to work even harder after this. It is very frightening, but if want to preserve our country and freedoms, it's going to be a constant battle.

A small thing you can do -- turn them all over, so only their backs show.

Socialism has failed every time it's tried, but they always think it failed because the wrong people were in control and it will be different under them. With all the countries under socialist control it looks like if they really wanted to live in one they would just move to one, there are plenty to choose from....but they want to take this free one over and turn it into one of the failures....I don't get it. Why don't they just move and leave us alone....we'd both be happy.

Thanks for welcoming me. I certainly won't do business in that store again. It was the socialist pamphlets that made me walk out for good.

As a retail business owner, I cannot fathom that the book business is any different than mine, IT IS DEMAND DRIVEN. Simply displaying merchandise does not get it sold.

I point this out because there have been many posts like this one, lamenting the alleged presence of a conspiracy on the part of book store owners. I'm sure there are some with an agenda, but the greenback will usually win the day. If you don't own or run a retail store, you probably cannot fathom what a KILLER dead inventory is to the bottom line. These books, as much as I would like to disbelieve it, ARE SELLING.

The bookstores I frequent seem to display the Ann Coulter books and Sean Hannitys the same as Michael Moore's and other lefties' tomes. We must deal with the FACT that people are reading these books, (or certainly they're buying them). I'm sure a lot of demand comes from suggested reading lists on the part of our wonderful colleges and universities, as I believe demographics would show the youngsters are the primary market for today's liberal writers.

Also, I have this theory that the liberal worldview, underpinned as it is by demonstrably provable lies, requires CONSTANT AFFIRMATION to persist in their beliefs, and the MSM can no longer come through as they have in the past, because of Fox News, talk radio and the internet efforts to keep them honest. Just my opinion.

I agree. It seems wherever you turn the the borders of decency and morality are being pushed to their limits and beyond in the name of liberalism.

Good and evil at war, very true. I heard a local talk show host say all votes in the past election based on moral issues should have been burned... a Michael Moore wannabe!

I don't think you're over-reacting...you, like the rest of us, are simply more sensitive to these things than most. There was an article in our local paper a couple Sundays ago...it was a national syndicated story picked up by our paper but I can't recall the author. Anyway it was a story on how politically motivated books played a major part in this last campaign and how many are still selling and on the shelves. It ran with a large picture of a display at a bookstore with at least a dozen books. The only one I saw that could be deemed at least mildly conservative was General Franks novel. The rest in the photo were liberal crap or Bush haters...Kitty Kelly, Mathews, DICK Clarke, etc. The photo was so obviously biased and the story was the same....

I hope you let the business owner know that you wouldn't be back, and why. If the store is a chain, you can complain to the corporation. A dollar from a liberal is worth the same as a dollar from a conservative. Big corps don't want controversy from either side. If it's a private business, and the placement choices are the owner's doing, then you can only spend your money elsewhere.

If one tells the same lie over and over again it sometimes becomes fact, this is true. Hence the constant affirmation of the liberal dogma, I agree. Is leftist material in high damand? Well, I thought John Kerry was in high demand in my county during the past election based on the overwhelming amount of signs I saw in support of him... he lost our county by about a 60 to 40 margin.

I was actually going to send a letter to the editor of the local newspaper. I am sure the owners of the store would read it and know exactly who I was talking about. And it would open others eyes in the process.

LOL ... I wonder why they don't display Coulter's and Hannity's vitriolic, fear-mongering, factually inaccurate propaganda more prominently? And really, y'all, do you think the answer to leftist propaganda is censorship?

"These books, as much as I would like to disbelieve it, ARE SELLING."

What sells is the sheer preponderance of this junk. The publishers, lefties all it seems, crank these screeds out by the millions, with each title only accruing a few thousand in sales. The conservative books, as few as there are, are selling too, in large amounts. But I think that these leftist publishers are really taking a financial bath in the end. Consider that their leftist movies, produced in the hundreds, do badly and lose multi-millions. While the few conservative movies made, such as "The Passion", do a tremendous business! And the conservative money made goes to the originators, like Gibson and Coulter, and not to the large, multi-national move firms or publishing houses, which is a good thing!

I agree that the market for this leftist junk is probably driven by naive and gutless college kiddies told to buy this crapola by their professors, with the kiddies going along for the ride to get a better grade. Who the heck else would waste hard-earned cash on this mass-produced leftist tripe?
