Washington, DC The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., today welcomed President Bushs nomination of White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales to succeed John Ashcroft as Attorney General. If confirmed, Gonzales would be the first Hispanic ever to serve as Attorney General.
We are very encouraged by the Gonzales nomination. We previously criticized the Bush Administration for not having an Hispanic in the cabinet since the departure of former HUD Secretary, now Senator-elect, Mel Martinez. We are pleased that one of the first acts since the Presidents reelection both rectifies that situation and marks an historic milestone for the Latino community. Never before has an Hispanic served as head of one of the four major cabinet posts Secretary of State, Treasury, Defense, and Attorney General, stated Janet Murguia, NCLR Executive Director and COO.
Murguia also noted Gonzales ties to the Hispanic community throughout his career. Alberto Gonzales served with distinction on the board of directors of one of NCLRs oldest and most respected affiliates, the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans (AAMA) in Houston, Texas. Moreover, during his tenure as White House Counsel, he has been one of the most accessible members of the White House staff to NCLR and other Hispanic organizations, added Murguia.
Murguia concluded, We acknowledge that this is the first step of a long confirmation process that requires that his record be fully examined. That being said, Gonzales is a thoughtful, reasonable public servant, a man of his word, and we have every expectation that his nomination will be very well received in the Latino community.
You may be right but unfortunately the AG has a lot of power to set the agenda. Moreover, I suspect that Dubya is grooming him for a SCOTUS appointment...otherwise why would he promote him?
Gonzales used a Michigan diversity mandate in his argument?
Show me.
Yes. It's also re-posted in #86 by deport, who apparently can see it too.
It's not a particularly interesting picture, really. You can see it here: http://images.ibsys.com/2000/0724/37377.jpg.
I still can't see it.
It may have something to do with either my settings, or the way he posted it.
I can see every other picture posted in FR.
Now the way I do it...
Wow, how weird, I can only see the second picture.
No...Gonzalez did not use a Michigan diversity "mandate" (whatever that is). In fact, that is my point. He used the judge made concept of diversity, not law (either Michigan law or federal law) as the basis for his support of diversity in admissions. You better stop digging while you're ahead because you're contradicting yourself all over the place.
Perhaps I misunderstood you. After all, I'm an "idiot," right? I understood that you thought that the SCOTUS did the right thing when I struck down the point system. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Then the issue is with the University of Michigan, the Michigan State legislature, and the people of the State of Michigan.
Not with the Federal government or the Federal Courts.
Now, once and for all quote and link Gonzales rather than telling me what he said.
You said that I praised the decision by the SCOTUS, now show me where I said anything that would lead you to "understand" anything of the sort.
In short, you are quite fond of making stuff up, AKA lying.
Lying and an idiot?
I asked you a simple question and said that I could be wrong. If I am wrong, please correct me.
Okay, let's try this. You say tha the SCOTUS would be wrong to allow quotas, whic the point system clearly was. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/user-posts?more=24485093;name=Luis%20Gonzalez
Where exactly did I say that?
"The reason that U of M won the case is because it wasn't affirmative action at all. There were no numerical quotas, and their purpose of the diversity being sought was not "to remedy the cumulative effect of subtle as well as gross expressions of prejudice", but rather to enhance the collegiate ambiance."
Interesting...U of M had no quotas, I said that, but you claim that I said that it would be wrong for SCOTUS to allow quotas.
Making things up I see.
Check this out. http://www.mayorno.com/em1508b.html
Do you or don't you believe SCOTUS was wrong when it struck down the point system? Your idiotic and lying friend.
As to whether Michigan had quotas, it did via the point system.
Thanks for that link.
I don't understand why the individual who wrote the original e-mail demanded that Mr. Yzaguirre repeat himself, it was sufficiently claer that he disavowed any association with any M.E.Ch.A. organizations.

STATEMENT OF RAUL YZAGUIRRE, NCLR PRESIDENT ON LA VOZ DE AZTLAN
Washington, DC - Recently the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) became aware of a website and other information that is being circulated on the Internet by La Voz de Aztlan. The phrases the site frequently uses, "La Raza de Aztlan" or "La Raza," are generic terms that many use to refer to Mexican American people in this country. NCLR has no connection whatsoever to the website or its sponsoring group.
I am issuing this somewhat unusual statement because, after a cursory review of the website, I found it to be full of reprehensible and bigoted references toward a number of communities - in particular, to the Jewish American community. No responsible Latino organization or leader of my acquaintance agrees with the misinformation being dispensed on the site, nor do I know of any who concur with the grotesque stereotypes that appear in many of its alleged "articles." This site purports to be an "advocacy clearinghouse" for the Mexican American community, but it is anything but that. Its rhetoric is completely antithetical to anyone truly committed to civil rights for all in this nation - it not only disparages Jews, it is full of ugly and snide references to gays and lesbians. Moreover, it attacks the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), a major Hispanic civil rights organization, apparently because some of its staff have chosen to marry people of other faiths.
These manifestations of hate, intolerance, and bigotry should be condemned by all Americans, especially when carried out in the name of fighting discrimination and oppression against our community. All Americans of conscience should know that this site is the work of a tiny, fringe group and does not reflect the opinions and feelings of the overwhelming majority of Latinos in this country.
Let me get this straight...
Your entire problem with Alberto Gonzales, a conservative, pro-second Amendment, pro-death penalty, strict constructionist nominee is that you don't agree with his position on the U of M case?
Bye.
I asked the question several times and you refuse to answer. The question was: do you believe that the SCOTUS was right to strick down UM's point system? I may be a "lying idiot" but at least I answer questions!
