(CNN) -- U.S. President George W. Bush was targeted for assassination by Marxist rebels this week when he visited the city of Cartagena, a Colombian official said Saturday.

"We found out through informers and various sources that groups within the [Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia] had been instructed from its leadership to make an assassination attempt on President Bush," Colombian Defense Secretary Jorge Alberto Uribe told Caracol TV, a Bogota-based satellite network.

Uribe said no evidence of the alleged plot by the group -- Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia or FARC -- has been recovered.

The U.S. Secret Service declined to comment on the alleged plot.

I bet their planning is not nearly as advanced as the planning at the NY Times.

Has anyone investigated the security forces of the host country? Is it only a coincidence that their membvers tried to separate the president from his secret service agents? Methinks there was some serious infiltration of the security forces there, and they could not continue withbusiness as usual with another state dinner knowing that the security forces had been infiltrated.

Our excellent armed forces flew over the president's entourage while our navy was in position offshore. Our secret service would have given their lives for our chief.

Whether the assassination was planned for Chile or Colombia, we are not a people to mess with.

The DUers have a thread on this subject and many of them are sad that this heinous act did not get carried out. I can't believe they would wish such a thing. So much for the party of tolerance.

Well, he was elected in a 0 year. He should have at least a close brush before he leaves according to history.

Why in the world would he ever consider going to such a third world dump?

Because he wants to make sure they sign the Free Trade of the Americas agreement. Once that agreement is signed, we will have an open border to every country in the hemisphere, and because the trade agreement states that "migrants" must be allowed to travel freely, plenty of people from South America will be heading north.

The hatred radiating from the media all over the world against this President puts him at more risk than most Presidents. God protect him.
